Not sure if Mary's still reading but I wanted to add my support. I haven't actually seen the programme yet (Blush) but i've series recorded it to watch with 8yo dd1 who's 'doing' Romans at school. Not only do I want to teach her about history but also continue (along with the She Wolves of England series which she loved) with my feminist indoctrination teaching of my daughters.

The presence of intelligent older women on TV is an essential tool for those of us who want to show our daughters there's more to life than aspiring to be a WAG. I'm grateful that you're prepared to take this vile personal flack in order (at least in part) to provide a role model for other women and girls.

FannyBrawne · 23/04/2012 21:41

Seems to me that more viewers are likely to tune in to the series to see what all the fuss is about (can't see any fewer viewers tuning in solely as a result of his comments)....so perhaps there is a bit of a silver lining in all of this.

I do hope so.

Pantah630 · 23/04/2012 22:07

I've been spending the day a bed succumbed to nasty coldly/flu thingy and downloaded Mary's book on Pompeii on audible....it's brilliant, am really enjoying it and can't wait to get to Italy and explore myself. DS2 and I are thoroughly enjoying the programme, I'm wishing I studied Classics now and it's certainly inspiring. Ignore Gill, he's a fool!!

marybeard · 23/04/2012 22:46

Hi Thanks all.

You didnt put your foot in it gazzlw. It's bound to be the case that some students bond or dont more or less close;y. I remember liking some of my teachers a lot more than others. I was just trying to say that it doesnt quite work like that the other way round. Somehow one does cherish them all (even if that cherishing can take the form of ticking them off, or pushing them in directions they dont much fancy!

NapaCab · 24/04/2012 00:53

Just saw your new history series, Prof Beard, and I loved it. There is nothing I cherish the BBC for more than their ability to produce good, solidly researched history documentaries that are presented and researched by real experts, like yourself.

As for AA Gill, the man is a sexist but a very average one in that his prejudices are very much those of the man in the street.

We women can't win, you see. If we are young and beautiful, no-one listens to what we have to say, we're just eye-candy. If we're more mature and keep our appearance natural, then we're a disgrace and should 'make more of an effort'. Either way, it seems to be all about how we look and not what we say, something that just doesn't apply the same way to men. It's not as if Simon Schama or David Starkey would win any beauty contests but there is no female equivalent to AA Gill out there decrying their television appearances!

Anyway, it's good old misogyny and I"m sure it was even worse in Roman times so at least we can be thankful now that women can present in public and be regarded as public intellectuals, even if we have to put up with flak for it.

Cathynclaire · 24/04/2012 05:52

AA Gill is an "arse" in mn parlance.

Mary, I used to enjoy your blog when one could access the times online free. I wouldn't dream of reading anything by that creep.

Why doesn't he stick to watching "The Only Way is Essex" or "Hollyoaks", if he wants to see young bimbos?

franke · 24/04/2012 07:31

Good, measured response from Mary Beard in the Mail (oh the irony) today.

Breath-takingly arrogant that the little scrote questions MB's assessment of Roman society. Fair enough if her intellectual peers and other experts in the field question her. But some lightweight who eats out and watches TV for a living? Punching a bit above his weight isn't he?

gazzalw · 24/04/2012 07:44

Seeing as Mary seems to be generating a lot of posts perhaps Mumsnet could think about having her as a guest?

Acekicker · 24/04/2012 08:49

Just watched episode 1 last night as I was worried it was going to drop of iPlayer and I'd buggered up the series link on TiVo. I loved it! Was I the only one who then spent the rest of the evening pondering what I would have written on my Roman style headstone? Smile. I obsessively watched documentaries about the Romans when I was on maternity leave waiting for DS to show up (almost 2 weeks late), a bit of me still regrets not giving him the middle name Vespasian - I still have the email I sent DH telling him that I thought it would be an awesome middle name and to hell with using DH's middle name Grin.

I had a proper 'old school' Latin teacher for GCSE and she was very into telling the stories behind memorials, I'd forgotten just how much you could get from a few lines chiselled 2000 years ago...

Gigondas · 24/04/2012 08:53

If Mary is reading , I really enjoyed programme - was good to dust out the forgotten bits of learning. It also seemed to appeal to my 3 month old daughter so am hoping this is early signs of classical interest (although she has shown similar levels of interest at anything on tv so think this may be my false hope).

And you supervised me a long time ago and were great- in fact your module is one of few I can still remember anything about.

MagsAloof · 24/04/2012 09:20

I [heart] Mary. She is so bloody clever and The Romans is brilliant.

Pretentious Initials Gill Bloke is a vile woman-hater, and not half as clever as he thinks he is (or as clever as Mary).

Gill is a twat. Mary rocks.

MagsAloof · 24/04/2012 09:26

Matthew Wright is discussing it now. Wonder what thoughtful insights he and his 'celebrity' panel will come up with?

MightyNice · 24/04/2012 09:27

please please please can we have a webchat

mary makes me want to finish the MA I barely started (even if it is classical studies rather than classics)

MousyMouse · 24/04/2012 09:29

what a lovely article.
hope that many many men read this (and watch the show). I'm looking forward to the second one tonight.

MagsAloof · 24/04/2012 09:37

Someone from Blue is one of the people about to discuss Mary Beard on TWS. Ha.

oenophilia · 24/04/2012 09:41

Another cheer here in favour. Have been carting DCs round Roman ruins across Europe since they were in slings (including sitting on the communal loos and pretending to serve in the shops in Pompeii). They have always looked at me a bit Hmm - til now. Their other feedback - "Look Mum, that lady's got your hair"!

Cheddars · 24/04/2012 11:47

I found this quite amusing with regards to AA Tit Gill.

sue52 · 24/04/2012 11:50

I'm really looking forward to tonights episode. Mary is a great presenter whose enthusiasm for her subject draws you in and makes you want to learn more. AA Gill should stick to restaurant reviews if he can't see the value in such a great piece of telly.

lemonmuffin · 24/04/2012 12:21

He's a rather silly man isnt he? And the daily mash is right, why do people keep taking notice of him?

clumber · 24/04/2012 12:27

Dear Mary,

I loved the programme last week and can't wait for this week.

Please agree to do a webchat as we can ask questions that occur to us while watching the series.

Yours sincerely,
Another grey-haired, over-fifty year old mother with no makeup on.

Cheddars · 24/04/2012 12:38

ooh yes, a web chat about the series would be brilliant. Smile

TunipTheVegemal · 24/04/2012 13:41

Mary has said she wouldn't mind doing a webchat. We need to lobby MNHQ.

Cathynclaire, the blog is outside the paywall so you can still read it, here

I missed Wright Stuff - please tell me they were on M's side?

gramercy · 24/04/2012 13:52

Ds and I enjoyed the programme.

I don't understand the criticisms of Mary's appearance... she has a fine pair of legs in her leggings. And I like the red raincoat.

AA Gill should stick to restaurant reviews if he can't see the value in such a great piece of telly.

What have you got against restaurateurs?

Anyone who thinks AA Gill is a misogynist doesn't understand the villain. He's the bully in the playground trying to look funny by picking on someone. I suspect the target could be whatever he thinks he can get a laugh out of. It is pitiful. And it is, of course, no way for a grown-up to behave.
