I watched this on i-player at the weekend and absolutely loved it. I love passionate experts - the more there are of them on telly the better! I really enjoyed the Richard Miles series too.

Heliantha · 20/12/2010 17:47

Mary, I think you're marvellous too! I have just finished watching this & have been absolutely riveted. I thought the new information about the skeletons at Oplontis was amazing, particularly the possibility of congenital syphilis & the impact that could have on our understanding both of Roman society & later European society. The evidence of 'multiculturalism' was also fascinating - the ivory statue from Asia was stunning! Thank you so much for a wonderful programme.

I'll stop gushing now Xmas Blush

marybeard · 21/12/2010 10:14

Thank you all! Really great to have your comments...mary

MmeLindt · 21/12/2010 10:25

Oh. I missed it. Mary, do you happen to know if it is available online, aside from on BBC iPlayer?

I am abroad and BBC won't let me use iPlayer, the rotters.

marybeard · 21/12/2010 19:22

Hi.. when I was in Italy, I found it on some You-tube type site, but havent managed to find it again! so it is somewhere out there,,,,,,but where...?? m

Mytholmroyd · 29/12/2010 21:08

This early evidence for syphilis is really exciting and important - I never understood why the Americans were so keen to prove they gave Europe syphilis in the 15th century anyway! Confused

There are people who appear to be of, amongst others, African descent buried in Roman York as well. The "Romans" in England are turning out to be a very cosmopolitan population - they are coming from all over the place not just Romans from Rome (although I think I have found one of those as well!).

I was talking to a documentary maker last month about a programme for next year and he said it was impossible now to make one that didnt repeat itself after every ad-break and have so many "bangs" per segment. But after seeing your great programmes Mary I know which one I would rather watch!

mousymouse · 05/01/2011 08:57

the pompeji book was under the tree for me, and my dh is first to read (he is somewhat of a history geek), I so far only had a chance to admire the pictures.
am really looking forward to reading it!

sethstarkaddersmum · 06/01/2011 11:30

Did anyone see the following week's Sunday Times and know if Gill defended himself?

marybeard · 11/11/2011 20:24

This is such a long time ago... and I was so pleased that you all gave me the extra confidence. Thank you. I have got a little bit of a dig back at AA Gill (in a self ironic kind of way). Hope you half approve.. a bit worried about what you might think about the Miss World line.. but lets see!

marybeard · 11/04/2012 12:28

OK I hope you people will like the new tv series I've been doing. It's called Meet the Romans and it starts on Tues 17th April on BBC2 at 9.00 (3 episodes... you have to wait till episode three to get the Roman childbirth and gynaecology). I dont think it is likely to go down any better with AA Gill than the last programme...but who cares?

GrendelsMum · 11/04/2012 17:04

Hooray! I was just going to post to alert people to this one.

Thank you very much for coming here to post again.

VillaEphrussi · 11/04/2012 20:30

Thank you for the tip-off - I saw the trailer a couple of days ago and was excited to see this coming up as I so enjoyed your Pompeii prog. Wonderful stuff!

Hassled · 11/04/2012 20:37

Excellent - thanks for letting us know. Will watch with interest.

marybeard · 11/04/2012 20:55

Thanks...really value the support; if you want to feel a bit pissed off on behalf of at least three women... try this. www.thespoof.co.uk/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s4i106002

I KNOW it's a joke, but cripes one needs a cast iron sense of humour!

GrendelsMum · 12/04/2012 13:20

I'm just left baffled by that 'joke' article. It didn't even make sense, let alone be funny. Or not be funny. Maybe it's meant to be making a biting satirical point about under representation of women on TV?

The clip about the baker was great - very telling and amusing. (Also I rather like your necklace.)

VillaEphrussi · 13/04/2012 19:42

What a stupid article showing that the man who wrote it is threatened enough by intelligent females to have to demean and try to invalidate them by assessing their appearances, as though his assessment is what they'd be interested in Hmm Pitiful, really.

TunipTheVegemal · 13/04/2012 19:47

It's 'have your cake and eat it' irony, where they claim to be making the biting satirical point but it conveniently allows them to engage in the same behaviour - judging intelligent women by their looks - that men traditionally use to put women in their place.

marybeard · 15/04/2012 15:37

I'm bracing up for a good bit more of this stuff...

One should resist seeking it out, but one also wants to know... try these tweets..

"An advert with Mary Beard in came right after one for Horrible Histories. Honestly thought she dressed up to look that haggard on purpose"

"Historiam Mary Beard in the sunday times on sexing up the romans; try sexing up yerself first woman - dragged thru a hedge aint a good look!"

and there are plenty more.. sad really; thank god I'm tough!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/04/2012 17:41

You've been in Vogue though (yes, I read Vogue when I should have been reading Sophocles and Shakespeare, that is why my degree is not so good).

Snorbs · 15/04/2012 21:55

Yay! Mary, I'm really looking forward to your new series. Your programme on Pompeii was fantastic and I can't wait to find out more.

Don't let the nob-ends grind you down!

crumpet · 15/04/2012 22:09

Stuff'em, Mary. Loved reading your stuff in the Times in the pre-pay wall days, and am looking forward to Tuesday.

Erm, how much sex'n'drugs and stuff will there be? Was wondering whether to record it for my (just) 9 year old.

ClaireFromWork · 15/04/2012 22:35

Gutted I missed the Pompeii one. Really looking forward to this series!

Mary I did my degree in Latin. I wish you could have been one of my lecturers.

Pan · 15/04/2012 22:50

Mary! Really great to see you here again. I had PM'd you following your experience on MN over the Miss World stuff, which wasn't really indicative of what MN is like.
Loking forward to The Romans - missed Pompeii but I bet it's on Youtube the best stuff always is.

Pan · 15/04/2012 23:13
themarriageplot · 15/04/2012 23:20

I'm recording it for the dc doing Latin and Greek. Smile
