Ooh hadn't seen this before. Thanks for linking! Took me right back to my teenage years... Those girls were very Human League, non?

sharbie · 23/10/2010 11:21

Grin we all looked like that then didn't we

cece · 23/10/2010 15:18

1980!?

OMG now I feel old. I used to love this one.

BeenBeta · 23/10/2010 15:27

Just fabulous. Sometimes I marvel at what goes through the minds of UK advertising execs.

I was 17 in 1980. Just coming out of the dire musical years of the 1970s which even when I was living through it I knew were rubbish.

Margaret Thatcher was in her zenith and unless you were there you cant know what it was like. It was like going from Black & White TV to Colour TV - not many of you can remember that feeling either I'll wager.

1980 was a good year

hattymattie · 23/10/2010 18:31

OMG just spotted Jonah Lewie. I used to love that song so much and love the ad (nostalga). I think people my age must be controlling the world now as I can realate to all the music but if it was really out in 1980 just worked out I was 16 sob!!

Horton · 23/10/2010 20:34

Jona Lewie looks bloody good for his age.

laweaselmys · 23/10/2010 21:34

Love this song! It gets freaking stuck in my head though.

ItsGhoulAgain · 24/10/2010 00:13

I love that ad too! I love the song, I loved 1980, I love the boys' skinny trousers and the girls' sculptured dresses, I love red lacquer and I love drawers that are stairs. I only wish I could afford the kitchen.

Cheers for this thread; it's nice to be unconditionally positive about something for a change Grin

1980? Doesn't that mean the song's just gone out of copyright? Maybe they paid Jona an appearance fee to make up for not having to buy the rights to his song Hmm

Not quite unconditional then ...

Schroeder · 24/10/2010 16:48

I didn't look like that I was 8[hshock]. More dungarees and a polo neck [hblush]

I still like the advert [hgrin]

MyMamaToldMe · 25/10/2010 14:30

i too was going to post a thread on this in a 'i heart ikea advert' kinda way Grin

Summerbird73 · 25/10/2010 19:53

ProfYaffle · 25/10/2010 20:13

I'm so pleased to hear this song around again. I was only 8 1st time round but still loved it and remember it well Smile

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/10/2010 20:18

I too love this advert, especially the 2 dancing girls. Had never heard the song in my life but DP immediately said 'Jonah Louie, he also sings the cavalry song' (to which me and DD gave each other the 'here goes the old fart' look)

I would have loved to have been an adult in the 1980s. All those girls with bleach wash skinnies and scrunched up big hair, smelling of Anais Anais in Jean Jeannie looked so glamorous.

Euphemyknifeinyourback · 25/10/2010 22:30

Love the song, the ad is naff.
I had the single back in 1980, when record companies would sometimes having amusing messages scratched onto the vinyl, just near the label. On this disc it said on Side 1: "Fuck the whale ..." and on side 2: "... save Jonah!"

HeadlessLadyBiscuit · 25/10/2010 22:37

OMG Euphemy - had forgotten about that! I used to love tilting the record to see what was written.

You don't get that with CDs :(

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 25/10/2010 22:41

DH and I had both said how much we loved the song on the advert we thought we recognised it but I was only 7 and dh 9 so not surprising we couldn't quite get it..

BeenBeta · 25/10/2010 23:00

GetOrf - ah yes a plate full of Fray Bentos, soggy chips and beans, sat in front of a grainy black & white TV watching flying pickets warm themselves round a brazier and hoping my parents would go out so I could ring my girlfriend in privacy on the house phone in the hallway.

I just knew it could only get better.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/10/2010 23:03

I remember the teachers' strikes when I was in the equivalent of reception - so would have been 1983 ish. The whole school was at home because of striking teachers, apart from my class because of scab strike breaking teacher.

I remember the resentment now. That's probably where the seeds of my socialism sprouted. Bitterness at the age of 5 because I couldn't skive off for the day. Grin

childrenofthecornsilk · 25/10/2010 23:04

Jona's in it loads - right from the start Grin
