i think 'abuse' is determined by the recipient. i dont think its fair to judge what is and isn't abusive.

i think liane's mother had some hefty self esteem issues she was more than happy to equip her children with. more naive than intentional perhaps but wrong nonetheless

Wanderingsheep · 04/09/2010 22:32

Hmm, fair point! Smile

Maybe calling it abuse is a bit histrionic but I thought that what Liane's mother was doing to her daughters was going to seriously compromise their emotional health and self-esteem longterm. Liane kept talking about how she didn't like how she looked without makeup on - at 8 years old! Surely that can't indicate that she has been nurtured and cared for in a healthy way.

Not to mention the fact that these poor girls were basically told that their worth was all dependent on how they looked. Surely that is setting them up for a life of either lowpaid work (because they haven't valued education) or dependency on a man for an income. All round depressing.

I felt so sorry for Liane and even more for her little sister, she obviously was a very unhappy little girl, even though her mum and gran kept denying it.

sockapoodle · 05/09/2010 19:41

It was awful! Why would you use foundation on a child - her skin was gorgeous!
Bit of glitter and whatnot is fair enough I guess, but when the little sister wanted make up too and she gets foundation as well???

Liane looked so out of place at that party Sad

chaya5738 · 06/09/2010 11:39

I know, I kept thinking of Lolita - a childhood stolen by an adult. When Liane is 18 all her friends will be getting dressed up to go out, discovering makeup etc and she will be jaded, a lot of the excitement of turning into a woman gone. Wonder if she will be in to blue rinses then instead!!

Her mother kepts saying that she would never let any harm come to Liane but I thought she had a simplistic notion of harm. Harm isn't just hitting a child, it is not letting them be a child.

@sungirltan

the liane one was horrifying. orange mother forcing her nasty, cheap orange make up on her little girls.

on the other hand it made the stuff i worry about (a bit of sparkly lipgloss/nail polish at weekends/parties on my neice, 9) seem really tame and really not a big deal :-)

hey karens , I'm the girl liane from the ep!! everyone concerned..... I've just found these hilarious comment. I'm 20 years old now and how wrong you all was i had the most supportive childhood and now I'm a drag queen and living my best life covered in tattoos I'm living!!! I'm so proud of this work
