Did anyone see Underage and Pregnant tonight - my god, one of the girls was AMAZING

The programme featured 2 girls, one of them being Courtney who was 14. She realised she was pg but her boyfriend whom she had known since childhood was killed in a car crash (which she witnessed) when she was 7 weeks gone. She carried on with the pg and at the same time was doing her best to raise money for a bike park for local teenagers in memory of her boyfriend. When she gave birth she was breastfeeding and doing everything herself as she was determined to be the very best mum she could. She was just so strong and seemed so much older than 14.

If she is reading this or someone who knows her is reading this I would just like to say how fantastic I think she is. Her little girl Amelia could not have a better mum and she boyfriend would have been so proud of her. I wish her all the luck in the world

She was fantastic, wasn't she? She's from my hometown and I've met her a few times but I hadn't seen her since she was a wee girl. I can't believe everything she has been through. She was so mature in comparison to the other girl in the programme! I hope she achieves her fundraising.

She was so beautiful in looks and character I actually was amazed by her strength, her natural beauty and her attitude.

She will make a fine mum.

My hat goes off to her own Mum she has a fine daughter to be proud of.

nickschick · 27/07/2010 00:59

i only caught the middling bit and the end did her Bf know they were having a baby?

peacelover · 27/07/2010 01:02

Yes, he chose the name Amelia for the baby. So sad.

I agree she was facing up to her responsibilities and mature beyond her years. I am so suspicious of the editing on these programmes though. It's just like that prog where rich families help poorer. Families in exactly the same situations will be painted as either saintly and hard working, or work shy and feckless.

For a start they didn't show the outcome of the other girl, who was admittedly much more immature. In every shot of the other girl's Mum she was smoking, find it hard to believe she smokes 24/7. The family of the "brave and courageous" girl were much better off and more able to provide support.

It's all biased and shite. People fall for it hook line and sinker though. At the end of the day both of these girls were having unprotected sex at 13, not ideal in any situation. The fact that the mother of saintly girl allowed her boyfriend to live there was glossed over too.

Oh and the fact that she was breastfeeding at 1 week will make her faultless in the eyes of mn .

notalone · 27/07/2010 09:37

Coinoperated - maybe it is edited badly maybe not. However the fact of the matter is that this young girl is fantastic. Having sex at 13 isn't good under any circumstances, but both mother and daughter said the boyfriend had a separate room and that they had been friends since childhood. I was talking about her inner strength, her natural demeanour and just what she has had to cope with at such a young age. I don't know many people who could cope with that, even in their 20's and 30's. Oh, and I am not zealous about breastfeeding myself, I couldn't manage it at all with my DS. I mentioned it because she did and because it can be incredibly hard. I am absolutely in awe of her

I dont think the dad did know she was pregnant before he died, Amelia was a name that he liked for a girl generally.
I watched this, was amazing! She was so mature and strong about everything and is going to be a fab mum whatever her age. Age is just a number!

MathsMadMummy · 27/07/2010 14:15

was this on BBC3? I'll have to watch if it's available online. sounds like a good programme if it shows young mums aren't crap mums!

and BFing - even if just the first few days - for a young mum is fantastic IMO. I know of young mums who have been explicitly told by MWs/HVs "you will bottlefeed because you're young"

candyfluff · 27/07/2010 14:39

yes you can watch it on bbciplayer - she was inspirational and beyond her years

nickschick · 28/07/2010 17:02

She was Candyfluff - being 14 can be a hard time - being 14 being pregnant and having your boyfried/friend of many years die is very hard.

I wish her all the luck in the world.

I rather thought the mum was too pixie ....i know we all parent differently but she seemed rather laid back about the daughter having sex at 14 and then not taking her pill and seemed to think it was ok after she is a midwife.

Izzy was so up her own arse.

And she was saying about her dds behavioural problems as though it was 'cute'.....i know id have been saying - less mascara and less bleach take your pill and behave yourself - I wouldnt have been taking bowls of cereal upstairs and mugs of tea ......and that girls room and when she said mum will tidy it for me before the babies born.

DaisyFields · 28/07/2010 18:03

I shed a tear for Courtney in ep 1, I thought she was wonderful.

I wonder why they only follow-up on one Mum & baby after the birth? They've done this in the last 2, but I don't remember that being the case in series 1. I always think that's the best bit of the programme!

I found it a bit strange that this week they didn't follow up on bleachy-eyelashes girl, when the whole point of her story was to see whether the baby would make the family a closer unit...

nickschick · 28/07/2010 22:16

bleachy eyelash gorl was a pain in the butt - and flame me but i blame her mother.
