Pl;ease talk to me about nose piercing

DD is 16. She is studying hard for GCSEs and generally is well-behaved. She wants to get her nose pierced, and although I don't like the look I've said yes.

However, DH is dead set against it. As a step towards converting him he needs to know if it would heal if she took the stud out. What do you reckon?

it depends. When I was a teenager, I got my nose pierced at the age of 16 and I took it out when I was 22. I still have got a little hole which I can't hide even with a foundation. I had my eye brow pierced at the age of 19 and I took it out just about 5 months later and even though the actuall hole is gone and I'm not able to put the piercing back in, it is noticable.

From my experience, nose is the first step towards all the other body 'beautys' as tattoos etc.

If your daughter want's one though, she will get it anyway, so for your peace of mind, I would let her have it in exchange for a promise of better study results or something similar and would make sure, that she has it done by some profesional, in a clean saloon, and most importanly that the actuall piercing is made from gold or stainless steal, not silver, because that could cause infection..

Piercings and tattoos are evidence of too much disposable income. Who's paying for it?

Since she asked me I've noticed a lot of pierced noses around, so it seems now to be pretty mainstream. She has a part-time job serving in a food shop & I'm not sure if they would accept it though.

She says she does want a tattoo too, at some stage. I tell myself that as long as it's not HATE tattooed across her forehead (or similar) that it's not the end of the world. Even naice people have them.

I have a second hole in one ear that I used for a while - haven't used it for donkey's years and it's still obvious.

I had my nose pierced when I was 19. Wore it for about 3 years then took it out. There's absolutely no sign of it now and you wouldn't know I'd ever had it. I never had any desire to get any other piercings or tattoos either.

i had mine done when i was 16 too, my parents weren't amused but got used to it. Check what size stud they will use to as most piercing studs are quite thick. I took mine out the following day and put a tiny stud in as i felt that the big stud looked rather hidieous. Mine got infected, but i refused to take it out, took a few months to settle down and it does take a will to remember it's there! i kept pulling it on cotton wool, towels etc ouch! i kept mine for about 2 years, then i realised it looked naff so took it out and now i have a very small mark, but it's not noticeable. you sound like a cool mum, go with it, it's prob just a phase and providing she wears a nice stud it can look quite good

i had my nose done aged 15 and i think once the hole is established for long enough it stays! i took out my piercing when dd was born 4 1/2 years ago, i put it back in last month for the first time and it was tight but definitely not healed over!

I had mine done 30 years ago, however, I went to a jewellers and had a tiny slim stud specially made and put it in as soon as possible after the piercing was done. This means the hole is hardly noticeable when I take it out, even now.

if she has it done she needs to go to a proper piercing place, not get it done with a gun, I have hAD mine in since I was 21, still wear it, but if I take it out the hole is tiny and barely noticable, could cover with concealer, in fact i do for job interviews.

I am sooooo jealous. I'd love to have my nose pierced but two things stop me. My age and the pain.
My friend Ranjeet did it for me when I was 14, she used a sewing needle and looped some thread through it. My mum was not impressed and cut the thread so the hole healed up.

Got mine done at 21 to celebrate getting my degree (in primary school teaching )many eons ago. I notice the hole that is there but no one else does. Even back then (well in London anyway) it wasnt too rebelious and is def very mainstream now IMO and not much different to having your ears done.

that's the nicest thing anyone has said to me for weeks! I don't find it easy - so often with DD I want to say "NO! - go back in your room and start some needlepoint/learn the oboe!", but - and MNers really help - being a parent to two teens has been a series of compromises, especially about things which don't matter much in the great scheme of things.

Shaun, that's how I feel, that it's pretty mainstream these days. Although we are in rural Devon, where wearing lipstick on the school run is possible evidence of an affair . Anyway, DH will come round it when we've bullied explained it enough, I'm sure. But he won't like it. Neither will I, although I admit that the tiny ones look OK, and so that'll be the compromise.

I have a nose piercing- I got it after having DS1 at a young age (22) and felt like I needed to do something a bit nuts! But I love it. It seems to really suit some people.

The pain, though. It's agony. I cried like a bbaby.

I had mine pierced at about 19. Took it out when I was 35 and no one can really see the hole. I just asked my workmate and she can't tell which side was pierced.

I would agree with others that one peircing can lead to another - although for me, I only ever had my nose and ears done and I haven't got any tattoos!

The worst part I found was getting the back off the huge gold stud they pierced it with. I am pretty sure I have one nostril bigger than the other after spending about 4 hours with my fingers up my nose trying to get it off!

I had my nose pierced 20 years ago (age 22).
It hurt for about 4 seconds.
Low maintenance ever since.
I have never regretted it.
I can't tell that it has ever hindered me at job interviews (I have never taken it out for one).
It seems to me like many women my age & younger have them. I see nose-piercing as very conventional (unlike eyebrow piercing, though I am used to that now, too).
I also live in a somewhat parochial rural county (Norfolk).

My 16 year old DD also wants one - I have been dead against it so far, but your comment that it will wind the ILs up has done the trick. If she asks again I will be saying yes!

I had one for a year or so in my early 20s (tiny stud, no hole now).
I found that:
-old ladies no longer sat next to me on buses (a pity as I always liked nattering to old ladies)
-all the cool people on my course suddenly invited me out with them (fine, but proved how shallow they really were).
Hence I took it out.
I would let her have it.

Tabithacat Tell your DD that I graciously accept her undying gratitude .

I feel that if we can get through the teens with decent exam results and without drugs/unplanned pg/tattoos/running away with unsuitable man then I can allow a little nose stud as a gesture to show good faith.

ilovepiccolina - I had my nose pierced when I was 14, don't know how it would heal as I've never had it out for long enough. Even in rural Devon 16 years ago I never thought of nose piercing as being that far outside the mainstream and have never encountered any problems at work (although I do take it out for interviews).

For me it was a slippery slope towards eyebrows and tattoos but everyone is different. My sister had hers done for a year or so and then took it out and never looked back, she doesn't have a scar.
