My 12 yr old Ds has been quite poorly recently, he has had a pretty bad chest infection and has looked completely drained for weeks. His cough/chest seems to have got better after taking antibiotics but he has lost a lot of weight due to being ill and despite the fact he ate like a horse before he was ill he still dosent seem too bothered about eating now and im getting a bit worried. He cant afford to lose anymore weight and im trying to feed him up, but he says he is full after a few mouthfuls! Im not sure if this is something to worry about or if it his just his age, he is 13 this year and I know they change quite a lot over pre teen/teen years.
Does anyone else have a DS/DD who has suddenly lost appetite when turning to Teen??

Perhaps he got low on zinc or maybe iron when he was poorly? deficiencies in those can lead to poor appetite. Perhaps try him on some minadex tonic for a bit?

Take him to the doctor. he's a very unusual age for an appetite loss.

prob better advice than mine!

yeah was thinkin of taking him back to docs but they tend to tell you at his age he is going through changes blah blah. Will take him back next week, was hoping id have a couple of replies saying their kids are the same but he does look really washed out so maybe he is low on Iron? Will ask them to do a blood test because he has been twice now already. Just want him back to being the human dustbin he is lol

He may have simply got used to eating much smaller amounts and if he's still only just really getting over his illness his activity levels are probably lower than normal

My ds2 has absolutely no fat on him at all and is very tall for his age as well - he says he's full after eating half the amount his 7 year old sister manages to put away - however he suffers from chronic constipation and this really affects his appetite so it might be worth checking there's no underlying cause to your ds's change in eating habits

Ds had a chest infection last may when he was 13 we had a further complication as he had a febrile convulsion with it and we were so worried about that we failed to recognise the seriousness of the chest infection/pneumonia.

I was writing on here a month later the same as your DS. He was eating nothing and was very tired all the time and also cold even though it was inthe middle of summer.

I took him to the doctors and he had tests for thyroid and anaemia. I really thought he was anaemic but they were fine. Another couple of weeks later he started bouncing back. I gave him minadex tonic but I don't know if he was just getting over it by himself

I'd agree take him to Dr.
I have 11 and 14 year old DSs and although they will go off food for the odd day when really ill they have always been back to being bottomless pits within a couple of days.

Try the minidex or similar iron tonic.
When I was 13 I was anaemic and totally lost appetite.
I still remember how I felt gazing at tempting little dishes of strawberries and cream and unable to push down more than a mouthful.
GP prescribed some liquid iron tonic stuff
and my appetite suddenly resurfaced.

Ive made appointment for Thursday to see a doc again. He seems to be getting better but want to get him checked properly and after looking up symptoms for anaemia, it looks very much like that could be it. Thanks for all the comments x x
