At what age did your teen start her periods?

DD was fourteen last February and has not yet started her periods. She's a bit worried as most of her friends started a while ago. I keep telling her that its probably because she is so light (she's about 5' 6" and just under 7 stone), and that really there's no need to worry until she's about 17. Do you think this is right or should I take her to GP's? TIA

I think 7 stone is around the weight they usually start so I expect she will start soon ie next 6 to 12 months. Is she worried? Maybe take her to the GP to hear GP reassure her?

I think my dd started at 14 but she didn't have regular ones for AGES, in fact they are still a bit erratic. She is short for her age (15) and does a lot of running. Tell her not to worry and to make the most of it, they are a damn nuisance really!
DD2 12 has not started hers yet.

brimfull · 13/04/2009 17:42

dd was 13 her friend next door was 15

Hassled · 13/04/2009 17:53

I think it's often hereditary - if you started late, chances are your DD will too. My DD and I both started at 11, which is way too young - I shouldn't worry. When she does start, she'll be mature enough to deal with it all.

northernrefugee39 · 13/04/2009 18:23

My dd 1 started at 13.
dd2 had a little show last month- nearly 12.
Agree with Hassled- I don't think it's anything to worry about. She can enjoy her childhood longer

Ok, thanks ladies. She isn't worried as such, but I think she gets teased a bit for being a late developer. She has nothing to speak of in the norks department yet either (but sadly, her Mother doesn't have much to write home about), so I think some of her friends have been making a few comments. Will tell her all is well and to make the most of her freedom.

DD is 12 and started in January
I didn't start until I was 14 but DD is the same size as me now practically and I still haven't got any norks now

Macforme · 14/04/2009 09:38

I have two daughters.. and the eldest was 14 and a half when she started..she too is very tall and thin naturally.
her younger sister actually started first..she was 12 and started a week before her sister..but she is a more average body weight and I'm sure that was it.

Abby is now 17 and says she is very glad hers didn't start til late because she has horribly heavy periods now!

optimisticmumma · 17/04/2009 23:12

There was a programme by Professor Winston a while ago about teen girls and I'm sure he said that a girl needs to be 7 stone before she starts her periods. That does seem to be the case for my DD and her friends - the thin, underdeveloped, light ones seem to have started later. HTH

mynaughtylittlesister · 17/04/2009 23:15

I have 3 DDs, 2 of them have periods.

DD1 was 13 and weighed about 7ish stone.
DD2 was just 11 and weighed 5 and a half stone.

I always thought of the 7 stone theory until it happened to DD2, and boy was she not ready.

angiebaby78 · 18/04/2009 09:21

I thought it was when a girl carries 25 % body fat ?? Its something to do with being able to support a baby nutritionally ( sp ? ) My dd1 is nearle 11 and she has all of the mood swings and greasy hair so am expecting it soon. I was 13 and 1/2 when i started so will wait and see.

kentmumtj · 18/04/2009 09:53

dd 1 started at 11
dd 2 started much later at nearly 15
dd 3 just turnt 11 and no periods yet

me i started aged 12

PuppyMonkey · 18/04/2009 09:57

I was an under 7 stone weakling at school and started in the third year of secondary - so it was when I was 14.

smudgethepuppydog · 18/04/2009 19:00

DD was another light-weight, late starter. She was 14 (almost 15) and weighed just under 7st but she was also very fit which I think is another thing that can delay the start of periods.

jalopy · 18/04/2009 21:47

I was 14 and my sister was 17, if that's any help.

girlandboy · 18/04/2009 21:53

I was 15 when I started, the same as my mum.

Dd is 13.5 and hasn't started yet. Mind you, she only weighs about 5.5 stone and only 2 small jelly tots for norks.

I think it might be a while yet.

Remotew · 18/04/2009 21:53

Just turned 11. At 14 its nothing to worry about. I've heard a visit to the doctors if they haven't started at 16.

I read it was body fat and weight at 7 1/2 stone but someone has just blown that theory out of the window.

Beantin · 18/04/2009 22:18

I think my sister was 14 or so, I was 16 and a half! A cousin was 16 too. My sister and I were always tiny as kids. Younger sister was always average to big for her age and started when 11, so i'd agree that it should be when her body is 'ready' to be a woman/carry a child and all that. I had a growth spurt at 15 or so, so think that delayed me - only managed to get a cleavage at mid-30's whilst breast feeding so am a late developer
