first of all I realse I sound pathetic......

DD13 has come home upset because of couple of girls have said some stuff about her being "good" friends with a boy....I know we have all been through it but how do I cope with the horrible feelings I have??? the desperate urge to make everything "right" for her and she shouldnt suffer any upset or trauma in life - how do I stop these feelings or at least cope with them....

On a similar note how do you cope with your kids getting older and boys and stuff....I want everything to stop now, with me in control stopping all the badness....

She seems ok and we have had a chat about it

You don't sound pathetic, you sound normal duffymoon.
You can't live their life for them and you know that. Try to remember that every upset that they deal with effectively gives them confidence in their own abilities and adds to their maturity. Think of it the other way round..how prepared for adult life would your 13 year old be if you sorted out every situation for her?
As far as you are concerned, don't ride the emotional rollarcoaster with your DD however difficult that is just walk along beside and take deep breaths!!
