A wallet.
After shave or other smelly Lynx type toiletries
Books are tricky as depends on his taste but my DS loved the Michelle Paver series which are suitable from about 11 to adult.
Robert Muchamore's C.H.E.R.U.B series would be about right for 13 as well.
Does he play football? New shinpads are usually welcome here.

Has he read the Northern Lights trilogy by Philip Pullman? My son, hubby and I also enjoyed The Abhorsen Chronicles by Garth Nix (another trilogy).

They may be just a little advanced for a just-13-year-old, but maybe not if he's already a keen reader.

DS had a birthday just before a school trip. We bought him a "sports bag on wheels" (something like this so he had something more boyish than one of our boring suitcases to take. Then filled (well not quite filled!) it with stuff that he needed for the trip - boring stuff like toiletries but also puzzle books, a novel, new hoody, sweets, etc.
