anyone else's teen finding it difficult getting a summer job?

not me personally - but most of my teenager (oh and one 20yr old) babysitters are back home from university and finding it REALLY hard to find something.

They're all very bright, reliable girls - but there's sod all jobs going.

we recruit in late may, maybe she left it too late? have to admit to having tons of people looking though this year hope she finds something

SE - I guess that would make sense then. The shops/pubs etc are full of the sort of teenagers you hope yours don't grow up to be (or are getting their FE from the local "college")- while all the ones that have gone off to University and are actually going to make something of their lives have only just come back so are too late.

yes quite possibly - I know my babysitters have been to practically everyone shop/business in town looking for casual work.

I'm going to be working at a summer playscheme. Got it through calling the city council in may and saying 'do you have any jobs in playschemes going?'

Summer jobs are always hard to find, I feel. A lot of employers are after a more long term commitment.

DD started her job last year, in May/June for only a few hours a week but is now having to ask to cut her hours as they regularly shedule her for 16hpw (4-8 Mon & Fri, 10-6 Sat) which will NOT fit in with final A level year.

She applied before exams fully finished to avoid the rush & works in an education centre for Primary age children.

The Supermarkets round here are always recruiting for shelf stackers/home shoppers & till workers.

My ds has finally got a job shelf stacking. He also does footie refereeing which pays way better.

It is generally quite difficult post-GCSE to get a summer job as these are bagged by those who have already got some experience - e.g. DS2 who has just done AS Levels and has worked for JLP for nearly a year got extra hours - he wouldn't have been taken on otherwise. But come September all those who have taken A2 will be off to university or whatever and all the shops etc need a new bunch of 16/17 year olds for weekend work. So, next year your DC will be fine (unless all shops close in the recession).
