Has anyone else’s (soon to be) Year 11 done nothing towards GCSE mocks this summer?

Has anyone else’s 15 year old (going into yr11), done nothing all summer?

his GCSE mocks start the week before half term and he has done nothing apart from attend 5 sessions with his maths tutor because I organised it.

he has stacks of mandatory past paper type work he hasn’t started and he seems to have his head up his arse about it.

I feel like I’m the only one worried about these GCSEs!!!

he has dyslexia and ADHD so exec function deficits make it very hard for him, but we have tried so many different ways to help him and he just turns it into an argument.

I am trying so hard to find a balance of not nagging but also desperately wanting him to at least try his best … gaaaaaa.

what can I do?

We’ve heard nothing about GCSE mocks from the school and not been given any past papers. DS has done some NEA work but that’s it. I thought mocks were in the spring term?

Maybe different schools do things differently. Our mocks are the week before and the week after half term.

My DD had mocks just before the end of the summer term.

She's had a much needed rest over the summer holidays. No homework was set which I am pleased about.

She will restart the hard work when she's back at school.

I am with @Lindy2 - my DS had end of year exams mid June and has had a much needed break. Done some Geography homework and a bit of science but think he needs some down time as it is a hard slog. His mocks are in December - so we will have a break at Christmas and then start again. I do think you can burn out.

when I did my GCSEs (many moons ago), apart from doing some English I had nothing over the summer. We all need to recharge.

of mocks are in October - that is still 6 weeks ago which I think is ok.

Dd has been set revision work in maths English and science to do. They had an assembly and we got an email saying all the girls should take 2 weeks off over the summer and then in the other days should be doing around 2 hours a day.
She said no way and most of her friends have said the same and to be honest I don’t blame them.
She’s is at a very pushy selective girls grammar.

I highly doubt that very many will have done much, if any, revision or studying over the summer holidays.

Why should they? They need a decent break and there are still a good few weeks left once they return to school in September.

I'd leave him alone on it and stop pushing the issue. Let him enjoy his summer holiday. He'll be back to it soon enough.

My DD has revision to do but is leaving it all for this last week. She needed a break from school stuff so I haven't nagged.

As long as she works hard for her actual GCSEs, I'm not too worried about the mocks. She is quite studious and sensible so hopefully it won't be an issue.

My DS who also has ADHD has done no school work, its the summer holidays and meant to be a break, surely. I want him going back as rested and ready for yr11 as possible which means he needs to completely switch off from school stuff.

None whatsoever

My dc (now sixth form) AuADHD inattentive type, huge exec function problems. did not revise for mocks (got 5s), didn’t particularly revise for gcse (got all 7,8,9). The exams to worry about are the ones at the end! Save your energy, trust me.

Holidays are for resting, not for studying.
Plenty of time for revision when school goes back.

DD has done some coursework (PE & Drama). Which was set for over the holidays, but that's it. These holidays seem to have flown by.

They had some form of mocks at the end of term, DD did suggest she may do some revision but I haven't pushed things, they do need a break.

She has done a couple of bits of homework but nothing else and wouldn't expect her to. She needs a break.

My DS is a year ahead of yours. He honestly did nothing last summer and just got ten 9s. He worked hard in year 11 though.

Absolutely zero here, less than zero if that’s possible! DS is still at the “it’ll be fine” stage and I wonder when the hard work will commence…

Probably expecting 5-7s here, DS is extremely laissez faire, but lovely, which keeps me from losing my mind, just.

DD had mocks before the summer break and next ones are in January so not much during the holidays apart from continuing with maths tutoring and doing the tutor homework. She will be busy once school starts so I let her relax, also wanted to relax myself.

Do you mind me asking if he goes to a selective grammar or private school? No one at our comprehensive (a well-regarded one) seems to get all 9s, or indeed many 9s. I’m feeling quite concerned about this.

No, he's at a good state school (no grammar schools in my area). Two of them got all 9s this year.

My son was sent homework weekly which we have forced him to do. It’s been a struggle!!

What as in over the holidays?! No of course not.
My DD got all A*/A (yes we are in Wales so on letter grades not numbers!) in her end of year 10 exams, she is heading for another intense year so I would rather she have a rest and a holiday really.
She has done a bit of reading for English to be fair. But nothing else

I actually think it’s really bad planning when schools set mocks / exams straight after a long holiday. It’s really important they rest in holidays. Many schools now do exams before the summer for this very reason. My DD (academic, happy to study) has done two further maths past papers but otherwise nothing. Lots of non school activities. I think it’s good for them have a break each summer and do anything but school work. Term time is v intense!!

Mine hasn’t done anything towards his mocks over the summer holidays and we haven’t even thought about it to be honest. He can start when he goes back to school and his intention is to sign up for all the after school revision sessions that are offered.
