Feel sad for the August teens missing out on socials (last to turn 18).

DD is a mid to late August birthday. Most of her friends are turning 18 now and so are enjoying trips to the pub and some have gone clubbing. She of course has to stay at home. Things will slow down for a while during exams but by mid June most will be out all the time pubbing & clubbing.

Yes her time will come, but the pubs are extremely strict near us (check and scan ID at the door) and there’s no sneaking in even if she stuck with a soft drinks.

She won’t even be 18 on A level results day so can’t join in (hopefully) celebrating and I know it will feel like torture.

Just wondered if anyone else has this scenario with their DC and how they are handling it?

I was a late summer born but in our day you could hide at the back of the pub and no one asked!

She needs some better friends!

BurnoutBee · 08/05/2026 16:51

Same as an August kid myself I just used fake ID, never really thought about this scenario however I was the only one who couldn’t attend an 18-30 holiday and that was rubbish. It is what it is I guess.

DandelionPockets · 08/05/2026 16:54

I'm late August and I only really remember house parties in that summer between college and university. Times have changed!

I feel for her but she'll soon be involved and hopefully her friends start to think of things she can be included in as well.

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 17:01

Times have defo changed from when we were teens. I had a rubbish fake ID that got accepted. Now it’s all photo ID that can be scanned. Don’t even attempt a club!

She has struggled with friends but has now found a lovely group who she met at end of Lower 6. They have demonstrated they have her back (different scenario) but she doesn’t begrudge them wanting to go out and explore the novelty of pubs/clubs. Of course she would do the same if she could.

When the weather was nicer a few of them met up in the park, but now the default is the pub. Guess it is just one of those things. But feels unfair none the less - just because of when your birthday happens to fall! FOMO is very real with teens!

My DS is an August birthday and his best friend is September. All other good friends somewhere in between. They all agreed that they wouldn't go to the pub until DS reached 18. 6 years later and they are all still very good friends.

Momager12345 · 08/05/2026 17:10

As a parent of two august babies, we just allowed our house to be available for friends and parties...nothing too wild but space for them to hang out...lots of their friends didn't mind having time at our house as it was much cheaper...we do have space for this though and it was never ideal

Snorlaxo · 08/05/2026 17:13

My son’s friends ordered for him or someone who looks like him would allow him to use their (fake) ID.

She needs better fake id!

user2848502016 · 08/05/2026 17:15

This was me but pubs didn’t care that much back in the 90s
I get that clubs ID at the door but surely she can go to pubs and not drink alcohol?

snowymarbles · 08/05/2026 17:17

My daughter is an end of August birthday and I worried about this for her - luckily most of her friends have no real interest in drinking. Indeed one of the friends had a no alcohol allowed 17th house party and some of them were really pissed off with the two who left it to go to the pub because they wanted a drink…..

FunnyOrca · 08/05/2026 17:30

In Scotland only about half the year group are 18 at the end. I think it’s good as alcohol isn’t an official part of ending school.

I remember hearing from English friends of teachers taking them to pubs on results day and champagne being handed out at school (2010s) when they went in for their results. This would just never have happened for us.

KilkennyCats · 08/05/2026 17:34

You don’t need to be 18 to enter a pub, op. Why can’t she go and just not drink alcohol?

I was thinking the same thing

Ukholidaysaregreat · 08/05/2026 17:45

You can go in a pub when you are under 18. I would also get fake ID. Problem solved.

Waitingatlidl · 08/05/2026 17:47

I’m going to get my August born DS fake Id. I just can’t face him missing out on all this. This will be next year but when the time comes - I’m willing to splurge to get a really good one

eewwdavid · 08/05/2026 17:48

DD was a December 18th birthday... i remember that summer being tough for her. But her friends were good about it and she sometimes joined for drinks at the house then left when they went out. People saying re going in and not drinking, she found they were ID-ing everyone after a certain time of day ..very occasionally she'd get away with a beer garden day time scenario. But in the main, going in and not drinking wasnt possible cos she couldn't get in!

Waitingatlidl · 08/05/2026 17:48

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 08/05/2026 17:42

I was thinking the same thing

Loads of them don’t allow under 18s through the door on a Friday and Saturday night

Waitingatlidl · 08/05/2026 17:49

They check at the door so the pub staff don’t need to be asking.

Wishitsnows · 08/05/2026 17:50

need to get a good fake ID

LattePatty · 08/05/2026 17:52

Both our children have August birthdays but they’re younger and I haven’t thought about this until I saw your thread. I have a summer birthday too but way back in the 90s as long as the bar staff could plausibly think you might be 18 that was sufficient.

I also wonder why she can’t go to the pub and drink soft drinks though. Do they have rules about children in the evening. Clubs I can understand as presumably you have to be 18 for entry.

AnnaQuayRules · 08/05/2026 17:53

My DC both have summer birthdays (Mid June and v late July). They just used fake id

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:04

For those asking, you can’t get into the pub as they ID on the door and often do spot checks too (even in the beer garden if it’s an obvious young group). Or they say no under 18’s after 9pm. Doesn’t matter if they want to stay with a soft drink. It’s mega strict around here.

Clubs she gets/accepts.

We have discussed the fake ID but don’t know where to get one. Plus they are often flimsy and the bouncers are wise to this so they get confiscated. Not ideal if you get rejected and you can’t get in but your mates can…

So yes, we will hold some early birthday drinks for her but don’t have a huge house (or understanding neighbours!).

Dig hard enough and I bet you can find some top quality fake id!

Waitingatlidl · 08/05/2026 18:08

Say to your daughter, her friends can come over in the summer for drinks in the garden often

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:12

No idea where to get good fake ID! 😂

Yes, will open up our house. Unfortunately many don’t live close though. They met at college so it’s a big catchment area.
