Feel sad for the August teens missing out on socials (last to turn 18).

DD is a mid to late August birthday. Most of her friends are turning 18 now and so are enjoying trips to the pub and some have gone clubbing. She of course has to stay at home. Things will slow down for a while during exams but by mid June most will be out all the time pubbing & clubbing.

Yes her time will come, but the pubs are extremely strict near us (check and scan ID at the door) and there’s no sneaking in even if she stuck with a soft drinks.

She won’t even be 18 on A level results day so can’t join in (hopefully) celebrating and I know it will feel like torture.

Just wondered if anyone else has this scenario with their DC and how they are handling it?

I was a late summer born but in our day you could hide at the back of the pub and no one asked!

No idea where to get good fake ID! 😂

Yes, will open up our house. Unfortunately many don’t live close though. They met at college so it’s a big catchment area.

your daughter might know!

how far are the pubs from you?

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:17

She knows of one lad in the group who has got one as he too is summer born. He’s paid £150! Still no guarantee of it being accepted. I don’t know how it works but they scan them sometimes to check if real. I’ve seen a fake once and it was so much flimsier than a normal driving license. Pretty obvious tbh!

My DD is 18 the end of August. It was her last day of college today and she was in the pub all day. (They left at 10.30). No idea whether she got served. It was more about hanging out with friends than drinking as far as I know.
Shes never really found it much of a problem. Most of her friends are either still 17 or don’t drink for religious reasons. The rare occasion she has complained I reminded her that I had a cesarian booked for 1st Sept but she decided to show up on time!
She is dying to go clubbing though and it’s been a factor in her deciding to have a gap year.

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:19

Pubs they would visit are a good 20-30 mins drive away. Local ones here a walk away are just as strict. Unfortunately she didn’t go to school here and doesn’t have local friends.

Oh, so her going out with them would be a pain anyway.

and then coming to her is not likely to be a regular thing then if they have to trek to you

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:21

@macaroni234 Then your daughter is lucky as this would not be an option for DD at the pubs around her college. It’s the missing out feeling that seems unfair when it’s about the company and hanging out rather than drinking.

@Waitingatlidl Yes that’s it. Say we aren’t local to her mates at all.

Poor thing…. She’s probably feeling going to feel very isolated this summer . Is she learning to drive?

Growingaseed · 08/05/2026 18:25

Does she not have a friend that looks vaguely similar? Driving licenses are black and white and quite small so easy to get away with. Friend can use passport if they are out together.

I doubt when they scan they are doing facial recognition checks against the ID? I would think just taking a pic to have on record.

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:25

@Waitingatlidl Yes - we are her local taxi drivers! She’s taking a gap year so will defo learn to drive then. Am relieved she won’t just turn 18 then go off to uni as without any ‘training’ she will probably go bonkers in the clubs!!

Times have defo changed from when we were teens. I had a rubbish fake ID that got accepted. Now it’s all photo ID that can be scanned. Don’t even attempt a club!

She has struggled with friends but has now found a lovely group who she met at end of Lower 6. They have demonstrated they have her back (different scenario) but she doesn’t begrudge them wanting to go out and explore the novelty of pubs/clubs. Of course she would do the same if she could.

When the weather was nicer a few of them met up in the park, but now the default is the pub. Guess it is just one of those things. But feels unfair none the less - just because of when your birthday happens to fall! FOMO is very real with teens!

Does the pub not have outside space where she can blend into the crowd and stand with her mates even if she can't go to the bar?

lalaland2021 · 08/05/2026 18:28

It’s really hard to get fake ID we’ve tried twice for my end of August son and both times been scammed. It’s such a shame. IDs get scanned so fake ones get taken off and for those saying open your house it’s definitely not the same for the teens as lovely as that is for the parents that do.

DS uses his friends (already 18) provisional licence and his friend uses his actual driving licence. They all have that same teenage boy haircut so manage to get away with it but obviously can’t go out at the same time!! Is there anyone she looks vaguely like that she could do the same with???

Blueeberry · 08/05/2026 18:30

I feel for you, OP! DD is an April baby and felt very behind her friends, especially so as she has no older siblings to borrow ID from. There’s no easy way around it but soon she’ll be able to use her late birthday to her advantage - DD was very pleased to be the last of her friends to turn the dreaded 20! 🤣

Lyyt · 08/05/2026 18:30

Well my birthdays in summer but I got pregnant in year 11 so skipped year 12 and when I went to college everyone was a year younger than me anyway.

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:30

@lalaland2021 I thought you surrender the provisional license when you get your full one?

I’ve heard about the scamming of fake ID too. Quite risky IMO.

Ooooooh I don’t know how he’s managed that one then!!

Pricelessadvice · 08/05/2026 18:32

Things must have been easier back in my day coz I was in pubs regularly from 17. Infact, I remember finally getting ID’d the week before my 18th birthday. I’m a late summer baby.
We used to have a lot of house parties aswell though, which was good.

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:34

She does has an older sister and of course we have discussed her borrowing her sister’s license … however her sister will not let her as it may look obvious with the age gap, they actually don’t look similar plus if a bouncer deems it ‘fake’ ie she is using someone else’s then they confiscate it! So there’s no way her sister will allow it as she needs it for herself (as she’s older but looks young).

My best friends daughter was 18 end of August and it is hard but on A levels results day they hosted a big party in the garden - disco dome, bbq etc and it was really good the girls all loved it - we were there and because the weather was so nice it was much better than being in some sweaty club!

lalaland2021 · 08/05/2026 18:40

It just seems there’s very little for teens to do to be honest but that might be where we live…. Good luck to your DD with her exams and hope she gets to do the celebrating she deserves

Beyondamountainandoverthesea · 08/05/2026 18:48

DD was thrilled she was a September baby for this exact reason!

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 18:54

Results day is going to be the hardest! They all go to Spoons then onto a club or something like that.

I’m not hosting a results day party and an 18th birthday a few days later! Besides, her mates live too far away. She will have to plead to work something out with them - but it’s hard when you are literally the last one left to become legal!!

She was 11 days late (her sister was early) so I can’t be held responsible for that part!

Back in the day we'd do this:
-Friend A goes in using their ID, friend B then leaves with both their IDs, passes ID to Friend C, and then B and C go back into the club/pub together. Probably wouldn't work at a club that scans identities or if the ID was very memorable in some way.

The more gross option at a local club that would stamp your arm for re-entry is that we would pay and get the stamp, immediately leave, lick the ink and then press onto a friend's arm. Results varied, but if it worked you'd also get in for free!

FortyFacedFuckers · 08/05/2026 18:59

My son is the younger one in his year but they were all going out from 17ish just using fake ID

Bellini12 · 08/05/2026 19:14

Thank you @lalaland2021
Keeping everything crossed!
