So me and my family are going to a vacation in really hot region. We are 5-me DH, 2 DS and DD. We are all going to wear sandals. But one of my DS(15) doesn't want to go outside with anything different than trainers. Do you have any advice on how to make him wear sandals.

Don’t? It’s hardly the end of the world - if he wants to have hot, sweaty feet in trainers then so be it. I really envy your life if this is what you describe as ‘hard’ OP!

Not a battle worth fighting!

NotMeNoNo · 20/11/2025 22:55

Pack sandals anyway. If they don't get worn you can bring them home. But more likely you can smugly produce them on day 3.

Kneeslikethese · 20/11/2025 22:56

Why would you make him wear sandals?
Let him wear his trainers

Oohh · 20/11/2025 22:57

My teen DS would only wear sliders or trainers. Not sandals of any description. I leave him to decide what to put on his own feet

TartanMammy · 20/11/2025 22:59

Honestly what 15 year old would be seen dead in sandals, I have visions of those velcro strap monstrosities, is that what you mean? Sliders or crocs would be acceptable to my teens though, which might be a good compromise. My 15yr old has Nike sliders.

At 15 they can make their own decisions about what to wear on their feet and face the consequences.

I think this one should be filed away under “loosen the umbilical cord”.
He’s 15. Let him wear what he wants. We live in a hot country, but DS2 decided he wanted to live in jeans and sweaters for about a year, he even wore jeans and a fleece when we were back in Uk during the hottest day on record. He survived. Getting him to wear sandals is not anything you need to think about.

Littletreefrog · 20/11/2025 23:00

Let him wear whatever footwear he wants. No one ever died because they wore trainers instead of sandals.

NerrSnerr · 20/11/2025 23:00

Just let them wear what they want. Pick your battles (and if you have a balcony leave the trainers out at night)

catontheironingboard · 20/11/2025 23:01

If his feet end up hot against your advice, then either he lumps it, or surely he can use some of his holiday spending money to buy himself some flipflops when he’s there. And then he’ll make sure to take sandals next time. Job done.

Is Mumsnet regurgitating previous posts? I definitely remember this one.
fwiw- let them wear trainers

mondaytosunday · 20/11/2025 23:24

Why? Let him wear what he wants to. He’s 15 for goodness sakes!
