Christmas present for 12 year old - computer?

My 12 year old would like either a new laptop or desktop for christmas. Im thinking a desktop would be better although they are pricey.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I’d probably recommend a laptop over desktop, gives more flexibility when needing to use for school work and desktops are expensive these days

Buy refurbished not brand new. And buy the highest spec you can afford within your budget

What does he want to do with it? Is it for school work/internet? Or is he into gaming?
