I’m aware this isn’t a completely unique situation… But I have an 18yo - start of an unplanned gap year - who is spending an awful lot of time on her phone on the sofa. She’s applied for one degree-related temp position, which is great and she’s got something next week. But she really could be doing more/applying for more. Even just getting up and going for a walk.

How do I get her doing more? Carrot or stick??

I think you can make suggestions but at the end of the day she is an adult now so it is up to her whether she will listen. You could let her know that she needs to get a job and after a month you will not be giving her any spending money or pay for her phone. That might be the motivator she needs.

Yes. Things haven’t gone to plan for her recently, so giving her some leeway. And her mental health seems a bit shaky. But won’t help her to fester.
