When do the teenage moods start wearing off? My nearly 20 year old son is so quiet and shut down it worries me. He insists he is ok and works hard but when I try and ask anything about anything or even if he’s ok all he does is give me attitude. I don’t know how to talk to my son without annoying him

Think it’s time to take him out somewhere neutral and have a talk about how much you love him, how he’s an adult now, whether anything is genuinely bothering him, and how you expect him to start being nice. Sounds as though he needs it pointing out that he’s no longer 13 and it’s your home too.

Hi he has had a bit of depression I feel. He went to a counsellor when he was in his early teens but things did improve a lot. He had a difficult childhood. I have been trying to encourage him to go back to the counsellor

It sounds like it could be depression rather than just moodiness. What does he do? Is he studying or working, and is he happy about whatever route he's taking?

Reading up on what you said I can see a few things perhaps but not much I would say is that.

He works almost full time. Doesn’t entirely love it but it’s getting him started on the employment journey. Other than that he started exercising and socialises with his friends. He’s not sure what he wants right now

Is this a teenage thing, or his personality / MH?

My 22 yo has always been introverted, but since a trauma 4 years ago is exactly as you describe. He's going to work and says he's OK, but it's very difficult to get him to talk to anyone about anything.

He doesn’t have “highs”. He’s constantly quiet . Just talks more with friends.

Probably a lot of it is but he has had a difficult start in life when he was younger which had brought about a lot of anxiety for him
