Hi my dd has a black box fitted to her car as she’s a new driver , today she was driving her friend to the station and asked her friend to what’s app me from her phone , surely this will be detected on the black box as it being my dd the driver .
My dd said it didn’t show up on her driving report but should it or will it effect next years insurance and knock off points
Is waze ok to use from her phone ?
thankyou

When did your dd ask her?

But no…. No one can control incoming messages Op!

murasaki · 11/08/2025 16:27

It was an outgoing message albeit typed by the friend. Waze should be fine if the phone is in a cradle and not touched surely?

My ds had his black box through Hastings Direct. He was fine using Google maps etc as long as he set it going before starting the engine.
He once text his mate from the car to say he was outside as he was picking him up for work and he got marked down on that. He knew straight away on the app he had - he then had to remember to turn off the engine before texting.
his second year insurance was loads cheaper though, he went down from £1100 first year to £465 the second year (he was 20 though so that might make a difference.

You do realise that this means you had an INCOMING message Op don’t you? So point still stands

Toomanywaterbottles · 11/08/2025 17:22

I’d think she’d lose points. You can’t touch the phone.

How is that relevant? The DD’s phone made the outgoing call. That’s all that matters.

how does this work if you have phone connected to the car? Eg I can say to my car “Call X” or WhatsApp X and dictate a message via hands free in the car. Would this count on a black box? Also if the car is a shared family car can you turn it off if it’s not the teen driving?

Asking as my son will be 17 soon and once he’s passed we’ll look to get a black box.

My son was told by his insurance company to make sure the phone was secured before driving and to make sure that no one touched it whilst driving otherwise it would be picked up. One instance shouldn’t have a huge effect on next year though as points will be built back up as more data is gathered, unless they do something over and over again.

Not sure about the hands free thing but it will only pick up it’s your son if his phone is in the car and if he is but isn’t driving he just has to switch it to passenger mode and it won’t count.

For waze her phone needs to be in a cradle if she is using the screen for directions.

basically once she starts the engine she shouldn’t touch her phone to avoid being marked down. So no her friend can’t message you from her phone whilst she’s driving as they will think it’s her.

if I drive my DD’s car (and she is in it) she has to set the app to a passenger journey.

Thanks for that

Phone the insurance company and get clear instructions
