Teenager having appendix out

Appendixquestion1234 · 27/05/2025 21:30

My DC is having their appendix out tomorrow morning after being in hospital since Saturday.

They are 18 so on an adult ward, it's all very different to previous trips to children's ward.

All info goes through my DC and the nurses haven't given me much information about what to expect when I asked them.

Anyone got any useful information for me about what to expect?

Thank you

Don't panic if it takes a long time. DD was in surgery three times as long as was estimated. I was a nervous wreck. Take stuff to wear that won't aggravate the wound just in case they can't do keyhole. I hope the recovery is speedy.

MrsMcNallysMaureen thank you SO much for your post. It did indeed take way longer than anyone expected. I would have been tearing my hair out otherwise, thank you.

They’ll probably be out quite quickly, especially if it is keyhole surgery. Be prepared that glue might be used and this makes the incisions look very puckered - we (also adult DC) had no aftercare advice at all so had to work it all out - it eventually peeled off so thankfully DC went back to looking like they only had one belly button after all. Pain was minimal, normal diet resumed as soon as DC felt like it.

Painful walking afterwards, trips to toilet etc

Thank you all. DC has eaten loads this evening after 5 days of waiting for the op. He likes his food and hasn't enjoyed not eating for a while. We live in a rural location and it just happens there is a big local event for the next 2 weeks that means there is a huge pressure on the only hospital unfortunately. Just grateful DC will hopefully be out of hospital tomorrow.
