Delayed puberty 13 year old girl

Hi Fellow Parents,

My daughter is 13 and 7 months with barely any signs of puberty. She is totally flat chested and no period, a tiny amount of under arm hair but barely anything. She is 5’2 and very fit and active.

I am becoming increasingly concerned. Her older sister is a very different shape and all her changes kicked in around 11 so the experience is very different.

My daughter is growing increasingly worried especially about the breast development and total lack thereof.

We have been to the GP once who said to come back when she is 14, but I am worried that with waiting lists etc that she’ll be close to 15 before they do anything, and I don’t even know what they might be able to do!

Has anyone any experience of this?

thanks

K759

Sounds perfectly norma to me.

Google says upto 16 before you need to worry. Changes can come on quick.

Notmyrealname22 · 15/03/2025 23:09

I don’t think it’s cause for concern yet. I am 5’2” and was a small
build. I got my first period sometime when I was 14. I also remember not having boobs for a long time. I really don’t think at 13 & 7 months there is anything to panic about.

Puberty is getting earlier in girls, but she sounds exactly like me at that age and I certainly wasn't out of step with my peers, albeit on the later side.

I went from nothing to a DD over the space of a few months (and had the stretch marks to show for it) around age 14 and a half, and got my first period around the same time.

Runnersandtoms · 15/03/2025 23:13

Completely normal, especially if she is small and slight. Puberty onset is a lot to do with weight. My skinny DD didn't get her period until 14 and at 16 still has very little boobs. Some people just don't!

A lot of sport can delay periods. It’s about body fat %. But nothing to worry about yet.

Hye000 · 16/03/2025 15:16

Every person is so so different and even google can’t predict it, my daughter is the opposite of what google predicts!

she’s tiny, petite, does high level sports, I was a late starter at approx 15+ years & yet my DD started her period at 13 years & 1month. Never saw it coming, we were both shocked. I thought it may just be a one off but she’s had two so far, 40 days apart.

Kattuccino · 16/03/2025 15:22

I was the same. I didn't get my period until 15 and my boobs have hardly grown at all. I don't need to wear a bra and I'm 47!

I think it is different now as puberty does seem to start much earlier these days. Other than getting a private hormone test, I'm not sure what else you can do other than waiting until she's 14.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 16/03/2025 15:30

I was nearly 16 when my periods started and had a huge growth spurt at the same time. Now 5'7". There is no norm here and I'm sure she is just lucky in not starting periods early.

Katherineryan1986 · 16/03/2025 16:08

Like others have said, don’t worry yet. I was 16 when I started my periods and my daughters were 13.5 and 15 when they got theirs.

Rattai · 16/03/2025 16:10

I was nearly 16 before I got my periods.
I have had three children ... No need to worry if she is healthy in every other way.

I didn't start my periods until I was sixteen nor did I show many signs of puberty prior to that. I have had a disability since birth which may have contributed to the late onset, but I have never had any hormonal issues and, once started, my periods have been regular as clockwork ever since and I suffered no lasting physical effects from the delay. Puberty hormones did cause my existing medical conditions to go haywire but that's another story!
The women in my family mostly started their periods at about 14 or 15 so it's probably genetic. I was quite small as a child, still pretty small as an adult, so that may be a factor too. I'm sure everything will work out fine for your DD, sending you best wishes.

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 08/05/2025 10:23

I think I was 14 or nearly 14 before I had any signs of puberty. Started my period at about 15 3/4. I was always a healthy weight and wasn’t sporty but I was very small for my age.

My DD got her breast budding at 10 and period at 12 and is now a 32B bra size now 12 going to be 13 soon! It REALLY varies my cousin didn't get hers till she was 15. My older daughter started budding at 11 and got her period at 13 in year 8
