I'm new to Mumsnet and am only interested in teen stuff, so figured I'd post this here. My job is in tech, I am a regular reddit user...in other words, I'm familiar with acronyms, abbreviations etc. But Mumsnet is something else! All of the acronyms make for incredibly difficult reading/deciphering. Can't we just type son, daughter or child? I can't be the only one who finds it off-putting. WTAF Mumsnet?!

Maybe stick to Reddit.

Type what you like. All forums have their rules, customs and quirks but no one is stopping you typing out words as you wish.

RedSkyDelights · 09/03/2025 22:23

Slighly ironic you use an acronym in your post complaining about acronyms ..

Foxgloverr · 09/03/2025 22:24

It's not that hard to figure out. You're new, you'll get used to it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/03/2025 22:24

It's really not difficult.

minipie · 09/03/2025 22:25

There used to be a cheat sheet page explaining all the acronyms. I can’t find it any more.

Anyone know if it still exists?

Needmorelego · 09/03/2025 22:27

I find it all a bit naff and sometimes confusing (DF - Dear Friend? Dear Father? Dear Fiance?).
I prefer to type "Daughter" rather than DD but I don't care what others do.
It's all a bit daft IMHO 😁

You do get used to it really quickly, especially if you are on Mumsnet a lot. The ones for family members are quite easy but some are confusing, like DS could be dear son or dear sister.

It's more confusing when people use initials for medical terms or job titles etc, assuming everyone knows what they mean, we probably won't unless we've had the same problem, or a health care professional. They should type the words out in full the first time I think, if they want more people to understand.
