How much independent work does your Yr12 do?

My DS 17 is a lovely boy: fun, popular, kind and gifted and disciplined at his sport (which he does to a high level). However he is really lazy with academic work, and we seem to be in a cycle where he depends on me to nag him before he'll do any work at home beyond the absolute bare minimum. I want to get him to take more responsibility, he is 17 and it's silly that he depends on me to motivate him, and also I don't want our relationship to be affected by me constantly telling him to do some work and his getting grumpy at me before begrudgingly doing it. He is very competant and independent at many other areas of life (cooking, travelling, handling money etc) so he is very capable of managing his own academic work (although does seem to genuinely find it very hard to motivate himself in this area, and an Ed psych suggested ADHD). He got mainly 6s and 7s in his GCSEs, and wants ABB at A level. I have asked that he just proposes time slots he will work at home, and he has proposed 2 hours during the week and 2 at the weekend. He works during free periods at school I think too. Is that the kind of amount of work that your Yr12 is doing? That's an hour a day on 4 days a week. Doesn't seem like much to me.

Dd, also y12 with adhd, does around 20 hours per week of self-study. This is what is the college asks of her, 5 hours of taught lessons and 5 hours of self study per A level. That includes her free periods at college though, it’s not all at home.
