12 year old 139cm tall..

my Just turned 12 year old son is 139cm. He’s so much shorter than his peers and often gets mistaken for being 9 or 10 years old. I’m really hoping he has a growth spurt soon but he seems to just grow really slowly. He weighs 62lbs and size 2 feet. He has grown a little and also gained a little weight the last few months since he went gluten free (he was getting sore stomach after eating and we have lots of coeliacs in the family), so I’m hoping that will help.
Has anyone had their son be this short at 12? Wondering what height they ended up as an adult? Some of his friends same age are taller than me (5’2). I feel like he will be 16 by the time he would be the same height as they are now! Never mind adult height. Feeling a bit concerned.

What was his height at 2 yrs? You usually double it to find out roughly how tall they will be. How big was he as a baby? If you are concerned about his growth visit your GP but I am sure he will grow in the next couple of years.

Mine is 12 and is 149cm and 86 pounds, and he looks very average in his peer group. There are a few bigger lads, But he is 12.5 years and has experienced a sudden growth spurt within the last 6 months to a year only. Before that he was a wisp! I don't think your child sounds that small that I would be concerned. He could suddenly start shooting up. Mine was in the high nineties percentiles for weight and height when born so that obviously means nothing.

my boys at 12 were very short. They both had bone age tested and were delayed by about 2 years (so at 12 had a bone age of 10). Both have grown significantly since then, both now taller than me (13 and 15) I’m 5’2. And 15 year old has size 10 feet. Dh is 5’6 and size 8 feet. So I think they will both end up taller. Some boys just have their growth spurt later

I grew around a foot when I was 15 and ended up 6'1".

I think it is better to start puberty later because boys grow until puberty, have a massive growth spurt and then stop growing after puberty.

Thanks everyone. Like someone else my son hasn’t stayed on his percentile curve. Was 50% at birth, 25% at 2 years old and now aged 12 is 9%. I have read many times that they are highly unreliable though.

My brother was shorted in his year and had his growth spurt at 14 so I’m hoping my son will be the same. I’m not sure if he was as short as my son though.
