My 12 year old ds keeps breaking his phone not sure what he does to it, the phone randomly starts glitching and ink burnout . This is the third phone in 2 months. iphone 11, the samsung A20 and now a new iphone 12 he got just 10 days ago. He needs the phone for his bus pass to get to school and after school activities . we bought a month’s bus pass and because his phones screen has glitched we’ve had to give him cash as he isn’t able to access the pass on the phone . Costing us double . What do we do, we need to be able to reach him and also he needs a phone for the buses . But it’s costing a fortune . The paper bus pass are more expensive and he could loose it . And i could get him an old nokia but I’m not sure if that would resolve the pass issue .

Has he got a decent case? Like really decent? Expensively decent?
DH recently accidentally dropped his phone off a first floor balcony and there was a small scratch on the corner of the case but the phone worked perfectly and was unscathed

It sounds like it's being dropped or knocked a lot? A VERY good phone case and a screen protector but ultimately if he can't take care of expensive electricals I'd be buying him a Nokia brick and giving him cash for the bus.

A proper wallet case that actually covers the screen.
Screen protector.
A second hand cheap phone until he can show he looks after them.

Can't you just print out the bus pass?
