What to do - if anything

I've a 19 yr old DS who has just taken a year off and has been working before starting uni from home this Autumn.

All sounds good, but he's been doing some daft things like getting lots of parking and clean air zone tickets (has an old car) Unfortunately where we live it is just one parking permit per car and that is Dh's already.

Anyway we also found out he's taken out some credit cards and a payday loan - he did buy a car and the insurance is high, but he has been working full time minimum wage and we have not been charging any rent yet.

My Dh is very concerned about the fines etc and that DS might be getting into a financial pickle. the fines go up if you don't pay them within a couple of weeks and I have pointed that out to him, he said they were all paid- £800!- but now more keep coming.

It feels like he doesn't care, just keeps getting them. Anyway what would you do, if anything? He's over 18. he got the full loan for living at home and will be working weekends as well as his course.

I would sit him down and talk about the situation. Let him know how much impact debt can have on his life and about interest, etc. If he's not interested there's not a lot you can do, but I'd at least try to educate him before he's in too much mess. Hopefully he'll listen.

Definitely talk with him. Why is he getting these fines - is he parking in the wrong place knowingly, or unknowingly, is it for convenience or forgetting the time he needs to go back to the vehicle? You don't have to fix it, but I think it's right to show concern.

Also talk about debt in general.
