Smoking weed

Hi, just caught our 17 year old son smoking weed last night. (Not the first time as we caught him vaping THC about 2 years ago) he swore it was a once off & we dealt with it (or so we thought).

He has just finished his L/C (we are in Ireland) & is working on the building sites for now (hoping to get mechanical apprenticeship)

He doesn't really get in trouble as such but constantly gravitates to lads that do. He seems a bit down & lacking confidence but I don't know if it is the weed causing that or (in his head) helping.

We spoke with him last night & apparently it's no big deal & everyone is smoking it... relaxes him, natural etc... not that I agree - but is this common amongst teenagers/young adults now? & how can I get/help him to stop.

He is finished school so thinks he is an adult (however he is quite immature) he has always been involved in sports as we thought keeping him busy would keep him out of trouble. (He goes kick-boxing x 2 a week & gym x 3)

What can we do to stop an almost adult child doing drugs. My head is wrecked over it. My 40 year old brother has a drug addiction (coke/pills) which started with weed 20 years ago so I'm terrified the same will happen our son.
