Can DD’s work do this?

DD (almost 18) works part time for one of the main supermarket chains. For the last few weeks store managers have been asking to check their bags on the way in to work to see if they have anything that they could have bought from the store and asking for receipts. Today DD was asked to empty her pockets to see if she had anything. She had a Carmex lip balm. The manager asked if she had a receipt for it. DD said no as it was hers and was used and half empty. Manager said he needed to initial it in case she was checked on the way out.

Can they do this?! I am pretty sure DD doesn’t have to empty her pockets on request or submit to a bag check and is under no obligation to prove that items on her person have or haven’t been purchased from the store. Does anyone know? This has only been occurring the last few weeks.

yes based on company policy and it will be in their contract etc

yes they can, and do.

ASDA do spot checks very very frequently. either on us entering the building to start work / upon arrival on the shop floor / leaving the shop floor or on our way out of the buildlng AND during shifts on the shop floor.
Always 2 members of staff - a security one and a supervisor / manager level.

M&S even think about searching staff cars in the car park - never seen it happen but it was there in the paperwork somewhere.

During COVID at M&S myself and a colleague both bought little hand size gels ( new ones had just come back into stock ! ) along with our lunch bits, we both got the checkout lady to sign our receipts and kept the receipt in our lockers, as if we ever had a pocket search and had a M&S product in the pocket then we could prove it had been bought and paid for - otherwise it could be thought we had just picked one up and started using it.

They did this in my office for a period, apparently due to theft of tech/peripherals. The one time I got stopped it was about 20:45 after I had been working late. I asked the security guard to get a female member of staff to search my bag and they didn't have one, so I went on my merry way. I was surprised anyone was pinching their out-of-date tech; they'd have had more to gain by stealing post-it notes.

it will be in her employee paperwork, check there.

We used to live in hospital accommodation (with DH job) and our car was searched every time we left the compound! Had forgotten about that.
