Car insurance getting cancelled

Hi, can anyone advise me . My son has had notification to say his car insurance is getting cancelled as did not declare modifications. The modifications that I know of are tinted widows & maybe a change of spoiler ( I’m not 100% sure as we bought as is) I did not realise that these had to be declared as I stupidly thought was only things like changing performance of the car like exhaust , engine etc. My question is if I cancel the insurance before they do which will be 05/02/24 do I still have to declare had insurance cancelled? Just thinking as they said they are cancelling will this already be on his record so to speak?

Hi, My son is in same situation and had an email saying it will end in 7 days if we do not contact them. Having read a few other posts seems when you call they are most likely to still cancel themselves even after explaining your mistakes.
advice seems to cancel ourselves before they do / date insurance is due to end.
however telephone is automated line that sends you to a web chat then to be told on the notes we need speak to data handling team so not willing to cancel so easy. Data handling team unable to get through says leave an email or call back. How can we cancel I’m wondering or have proof if cannot do online. As data handling will be quick to cancel there end themselves not saying it was us if we speak to them.
So stressing as hard enough getting insurance as it is with prices so ideally don’t want to have to declare on future quotes.

I know I am so stressed about this . It was a genuine mistake on our part ( I understand we made the mistake) but I really want to avoid his insurance being cancelled. They did not even offer us to amend the policy so that the cover is correct . I just want to know if I cancel the insurance myself before they do will this still have to be declared as a cancelled policy ?

No if you cancel before they do you won’t need to declare it as cancelled because it wasn’t

cryinglaughing · 29/01/2024 21:34

If you cancel, you will not need to declare that you have had insurance cancelled when getting quotes.

Shivvyw · 29/01/2024 21:35

Even if they have already said they are cancelling?

Will this be the case as they have already notified me they are going to cancel?

Yes, I think advice many I’ve read to try cancel ourselves but how when cannot get through on a call?? Or they don’t listen and cancel there & then themselves??

Shivvyw · 29/01/2024 21:44

I can get through to the insurance company have spoken to them today but this was just in regards to them cancelling . I have not tried to cancel myself yet as just so unsure where I stand on cancelling myself after they have said they will cancel 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thanks Problem is online chat says note on system need speak to the data handling team. If we send an email no garuntee they accept them cancellation request or reply before the date they said will cancel in a few days. So not sure if an email will be proof of they don’t respond to it.

I have just re-posted my question on here under legal matters to see if anyone in insurance can give a more definitive answer 🤞🏼

From my understanding if you cancel before the cancellation date that they’ve provided then you don’t need to declare it. I’d cut your losses, phone up first thing in the morning and cancel it before them as this will be the best thing in the long term

Shivvyw · 29/01/2024 23:09

Hi thanks for your reply . My sister has just spoken with someone she knows in insurance and they have also advised to cancel myself . Like you say I guess I have nothing to lose by cancelling myself.

My dad forgot to declare a named driver accident. They tried to cancel. He just rang them and cancelled first. Within the cooling off period. By the way even a tow bar is a modification!!!!! That caught me out when I rang to check something else with them!!

Shivvyw · 29/01/2024 23:28

Thank you . Unfortunately he is about a month into the policy so not in cooling off period . I have put my question on few diff places and most are saying to cancel myself before the 7days is up . Just so unsure if I still need to declare the cancellation when getting new quote 🤷🏽‍♀️

We are in the 14 day period. We also paid the whole year in full for the policy as no option of monthly with this quote. Not sure were we stand in terms of getting any refund but I’d rather us not having to declare they cancelled & take a loss on the money tbh.
