Boys who grunt

Several months ago my nearly 15 yr old son overnight seemed to loose his ability to speak.
Now I'm not saying he was that articulate to begin with but now he's turned into a sort of grunting neanderthall.
Everything is "ugh"
I find myself saying is that ugh..yes or ugh..no?
Has anyone else experienced this behaviour? and if so how long is it likely to last?
I hope it's not permenant.

Yes, they are turning into men so as such, they tend to get a lot more uncommunicative. Mine's only 14 but he's been grunting for a while.

Sally I've a nearly 13 yo who grunts and has undone shoelaces and mud on his school trousers all the time and...AAAARGGGGHHH ...also a 14 yo who sometimes grunts and sometimes comes up to me and gives me a big hug .

My 12 yo grunts at me, so I grunt back until I get a grammatically correct sentence out of him. It's amazing how long I can keep it up for ...there is also stacks of intonation you can get into a grunt, especially the interrogative grunt, the cynical grunt, the annoyed grunt...the list is endless.

My friend has a teenager who grunts and she says that now she has learnt to translate what each grunt means by its tone, rather like interpreting the early sounds of a toddler!

I remember my brothers going through this phase - rest assured they are all v articulate now!

My 14yr old ds has been grunting since turning 12. He grunts and I say "again in English" - he laughs and as if by magic words are formed. Now that 11yr old ds has got his braces it's a bit like speaking to Bill and Ben here.

Was sitting in the chair at the hairdresser recently when a teenage boy was dragged in by his mother. They were there for 30 minutes and he communicated purely in grunt the entire time. I had always thought it was a bit of a myth up to then.

I work in a school, about 90% seem to grunt!
