A woman on Reddit had this and the advice was to imitate. I imagine nothing would put a teen off quicker!

AreolaGrande · 29/10/2023 00:02

Say less.

‘Low it

Fiddlersgreen · 29/10/2023 00:13

My son hates it when I speak back at him in “his” language.
It’s cringe apparently.
Hasn’t stopped him speaking this way unfortunately

MorrisZapp · 29/10/2023 00:22

Is 'I'm aware' part of this culture or is it just my DS that says this constantly?

CesareBorgia · 29/10/2023 00:27

Just joining thread because I'm fascinated by modern slang.

DiscoBeat · 29/10/2023 00:30

Idk blud.

I'm looking forward to being able to converse with my teen in my own language again. And I agree that talking back in theirs doesn't stop it. I just get 'Mum, don't ever do that again' 😆

WednesdaysChild50 · 29/10/2023 00:34

I just laugh when I hear the (white) boys in their tracksuits and little bags trying to talk patois like they are some yardie. Do that not realise how stupid they look. 🤣🤣🤣

Criminal and offensive.

Radiodread · 29/10/2023 00:46

I’d be having a talk about cultural appropriation and how it makes you look like a white knobhead.

This 👍🏻

Haggisfish3 · 29/10/2023 01:06

I find language fascinating. Isn’t this how language changes over time?!

TheBeesKnee · 29/10/2023 01:08

I recall going through this phase at school. I think I grew tired of it, it took a lot of effort. Blud.

But in all seriousness, it was the sketchy company I kept. These days I hear regular kids speak like that, so who knows 🙈

MrsGalloway · 29/10/2023 01:10

Refuse to answer to Blud or Bruv and insist on Mummy.

theprincessthepea · 29/10/2023 01:15

Funny thread.

If you haven’t got into the habit of correcting their speech (I always tell my DD remove “like” “basically” “literally” from your vocabulary since she was an older child - it even became a game - so in her teens I’m able to do correct her or I’ll pretend I don’t understand until it’s said properly).

If she’s talking to me she speaks normally - if she adds any slang it’s usually banter.

Eddyraisins · 29/10/2023 01:18

What's up my G. How are you doing mush?
