What do teenage boys wear?

My partner has a 14 year old son, who is in full teenager mode 😁
The school has a non uniform day on Friday and my partner has asked me to see if I can find out what teenagers are wearing these days, as his son lives in cheap joggers and a plain t-shirt at home and doesn’t ever go out with his friends. His Dad doesn’t want him to get picked on for not being cool and is willing to splash a little bit of cash (not designer gear but sports brands sort of thing) but his son isn’t being very forthcoming about what he wants to wear or what his friends are wearing. Can anyone help with some suggestions? My son is only 7 so I'm not quite there yet!

Tracksuits. Trainers. Typical teen uniform here!

CreativeCrochet · 17/10/2023 09:15

So not jeans then? 👖

What kind of trainers does he wear? Ime most teen boys are not in expensive clothes but wear expensive trainers.

Shodan · 17/10/2023 09:18

Jeans very occasionally. Not comfy enough for slobbing, apparently 😂

Superdry (or Jack WIlls) hoody and t shirt. DS2 wears Next trackie bottoms. Virtually identical to what his brother wore, 12 years ago, at the same age (nearly 16)

Chinos will probably start featuring in a year or so.

BoohooWoohoo · 17/10/2023 09:19

Sometimes they wear jeans but I mainly see joggers.

CreativeCrochet · 17/10/2023 09:19

Adidas trainers ( my fella is a runner and an adidas fan!) his son really could t care less from what I've seen 😂

My son is 13 and wears sports tracksuits mostly Nike etc as that seems to be the norm where we live

DS is 14 and even though it’s freezing, he is still wearing jogger material shorts and tries to go out in a T-shirt but I make him put a hoodie on. Unfortunately, he does like brands like Hugo Boss but he has a Saturday job so he can buy some of it himself 😂. He also likes Nike Jordan stuff. Shoes must be Jordans or Air Force Ones and of course he must wear the obligatory white sports socks.

This is all fashion gold folks, thank you! 🙏🏻😊

DS age 12 wore jeans from NEXT, Nike air force 1 trainers, a plain t-shirt and Nike zip-up hooded top for non-uniform day.

I think a lot wear joggers but he prefers jeans for some reason.

I don’t think you can really go wrong with Nike or Adidas?

not sure whether it can depend on areas.. PP above mentioned Superdry but that is very much the ‘older’ generation choice round here (35+)

CreativeCrochet · 17/10/2023 09:45

Huge thank you to everyone who has replied, I've shared this thread with my DP and there's enough suggestions here for him to do some shopping this week. Very grateful to you all 😊🙏🏻

I have two teen boys.
Safest bets would be Nike or adidas. I think there are some regional differences (eg never see any teens in superdry around here)

Go to jdsports and get a black or grey hoody and trackies with a small logo - can't go wrong with that (not matching)

AvengedQuince · 17/10/2023 09:57

Mine wears what he likes, most often grey hiking trousers, mint or lilac t-shirt and light grey or purple hoodie, no obvious branding.

IsThisNameTaken · 17/10/2023 09:57

Joggers and hoodie - pref Nike or adidas - DS refuses Superdry or Under Armour. Cargo trousers and hoodie to look a bit smarter(!!).

Favouritefruits · 17/10/2023 10:03

See I’d say fancy trainers, jeans, plain black nike Tshirt with small tick and and adidas hoodie! They like to blend in at that age nothing to draw attention to themselves!

melmonroe · 17/10/2023 10:04

Definitely not superdry - that's for gen z around here 😂

Nike and adidas for the cheapest option or outlet brands if you have one close.

Tempnamechng · 17/10/2023 10:10

It depends on the child and where you are. We are semi rural and most dress for their lifestyle. The Townies at my ds's school its head to toe Nike or Adidas. For the rural kids its rugby or checked shirts, jeans and walking boots, strictly unbranded unless its Schoffel.

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2023 10:14

Yes area is very important, we live in a 'big town' - if you're very rural it might be very different!

watcherintherye · 17/10/2023 10:23

I would honestly avoid buying designer clothes with obvious logos unless you have okayed it with his ds first. Buying clothes for teenagers, undirected, is a minefield! Tbh, he’d probably be fine in joggers/track suit bottoms, a t-shirt and hoodie. Black or grey. Maybe splash out on the trainers as a op suggested, but check with ds! As far as I remember (only a couple of years ago), wearing your own clothes definitely didn’t mean going to school dressed head to toe in new designer stuff. That in itself would have been more likely to attract negative attention at ds’s school than ‘dressing down’, especially if it’s not someone’s normal style.

watcherintherye · 17/10/2023 10:24

Maybe splash out on the trainers as a op suggested

as a pp suggested!

Comefromaway · 17/10/2023 10:37

Nike & Addidas are safe brands

Champion, Stone Island (mega bucks), Armani and Primark are all also worn but can be very dependent on who you mix with. Eg my son's friend has a lot of Champion joggers but my son hates the brand.

caringcarer · 17/10/2023 10:50

My teen foster son likes Under Armour, New Balance and most Sports brands but not Nike. He is a very sporty DC though.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/10/2023 10:57

Super dry is for parents trying to show that they are still cool!

DS(15) likes TNF, has a pair of jeans that pull on like joggers (like toddlers wear!) but mostly also wears hiking trousers. Mix of T shirts from next, Asda, Crew, TNF, Vans, Bench. Loves his Holister hoody, also still has a Hype hoody. TNF. Lands End borg lined hoody. He's really not into brands, like the patterns. His better stuff had all been presents from my very fashion conscious sister!

He has a pair of chinos and a checked shirt for best!

Imnoonesfool · 17/10/2023 11:04

Most 14 yr old boys (yr 9) in our area it is Nike tracksuits with Nike air force in plain white going into yr 10 then it is starting to be a bit more ‘vibey’ according to my yr 10 dd …. She likes boys in baggy jeans 😂
