What do teenage boys wear?

My partner has a 14 year old son, who is in full teenager mode 😁
The school has a non uniform day on Friday and my partner has asked me to see if I can find out what teenagers are wearing these days, as his son lives in cheap joggers and a plain t-shirt at home and doesn’t ever go out with his friends. His Dad doesn’t want him to get picked on for not being cool and is willing to splash a little bit of cash (not designer gear but sports brands sort of thing) but his son isn’t being very forthcoming about what he wants to wear or what his friends are wearing. Can anyone help with some suggestions? My son is only 7 so I'm not quite there yet!

Baggy 90’s jeans (gap/H&M) and a band t shirt here and van trainers
wouldn’t be seen dead in tracksuit bottoms

GymWanker · 17/10/2023 11:41

My 15 year old son lives in nike cargo joggers, tech fleece or nike jumper, nike t.shirt, nike Jordans or air forces. Basically, as I always say, he looks like Nike has thrown up on him.

I was at the local college a few days back, lots of kids between the ages of 15 and 21. Fashion wise they seemed to be split into three groups, those who were in full show off mode, those who were wearing stuff to do with their jobs and others who didn't seem to care what they wore.

I remember when I was at school I was anti label (still am) still never owned anything with a swoosh logo on it.

I would let him wear whatever he likes, rather than making him out to be something he isn't.

17yr old DS, it's jeans, plain ish t shirts and hoodies and on feet converse or Vans. Definitely not branded stuff other than the shoes

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/10/2023 11:55

My 14 yo mostly wears joggers and a t-shirt. Sometimes jeans.

bellsbuss · 17/10/2023 11:57

Nike or under armour tracksuits , North face hoodies, nike trainers

dementedpixie · 17/10/2023 12:05

For dress down days ds (17) wears a pair of shorts (unbranded usually e.g. matalan!) a plain dark tshirt and a pair of black trainers that might be adidas. He doesn't like logos on tshirts and isn't into any brands. Wears a zip up hoody

BCCoach · 17/10/2023 12:19

Jeans (or combat shorts if it's even remotely sunny, regardless of the temperature) and a band t-shirt or Fox racing t-shirt, gilet or similar if cold. It seems that the old 90s look of a short sleeve t-shirt worn over a longsleeve is also making a comeback. Trainers (Adidas, Vans, Five-Ten) or Timberlands. Trackies are considered chav (sorry, their words not mine) unless you are actually doing, or have just done sport.

Shodan · 17/10/2023 14:33

It's definitely area-dependent then! 😂No self-respecting teen boy around here would buy or wear Adidas or other sports' brand hoodies, likewise any kind of 'fancy' trainer. Sports brands are for when you're either about to do or have just done sports.

Hollister hoodies are also quite popular here.

DominoRules · 17/10/2023 14:38

Have 2 teen boys and generally it’s Under Amour, Fox, Nike and Oakley - always dark and always a small inconspicuous logo. Nike or Asics trainers. Both still in shorts, it has to be in the minuses before they will even consider jogging bottoms!

bumtrumpet · 17/10/2023 14:40

Head to toe Nike outfit, except when he has a girlfriend and will occasionally wear jeans.

fgsstopbs · 17/10/2023 14:48

Nike, Adidas or Under Armour are the brands my son and his mates wear.

Terfosaurus · 17/10/2023 15:04

Mine wouldn't be seen dead in joggers outside of the house. Hate Nike/addidas etc.

Jeans/chinos/skinny cargo type things. Either plain coloured t-shirts or star wars/lego/Rick and morty ones.

Hoody. DS1 wears vans. DS2 has plain black trainers or canvas boots with smiley faces on.

CreativeCrochet · 17/10/2023 15:12

Gosh, it does seem to vary depending on area doesn't it? We're in south Essex, I've not really paid attention to what teenagers wear round here and I work in an art college so that's no help cause our students wear all sorts of weird and wacky clothes!
I think joggers and some branded trainers might be the way to go for now, although I am loving the cargo pants vibe ( being a child of the 90's myself 😂)

Totally depends on the child. My DS lives in baggy jeans (the bigger the better), baggy t-shirts and hoodies, usually accompanied by Doc's, a beanie and the occasional again attached to his jeans.

SHM2407 · 17/10/2023 15:14

I think you can't go wrong with black or dark grey Nike trackie bottoms (or maybe Under Armour), Nike trainers and a plain t shirt.

Otherwise I think it's more by area, round here On Cloud, Montirex, Berghaus and Mountain Equipment are massively popular but only 20 miles away no one wears them (or people wear them to actually climb mountains!)

As someone said earlier - just go in JD and grab something dark!

CowboyJoanna · 17/10/2023 15:15

Mostly seen lads in trackies, trainers, hoodies, those stupid puffer jacket things

thismummydrinksgin · 17/10/2023 15:15

Go to Jd sports and you won't go far wrong in terms of coolness but would avoid the really really expensive Nike tracksuits (Nike tech) as can be seen as the 'roadman' look - hasten to add my daughter is desperate for one of these and it wouldn't put me off getting her one but just thinking if he might look a bit much in it.

Pinkypie86 · 17/10/2023 15:20

The North Face, Jordans, Nike SBs, Nike Air Force 1s, New Balance 550s.
Shorts ( my son won't wear anything else ) they have to be fleece lined usually Adidas/Nike/Jordan.
Always a football shirt or training top - usually vintage footy shirts ( thats his thing ).

North Face or Napapijiri coat.
White Nike socks!!

JohnNolan · 17/10/2023 15:22

Nike joggers, Nike hoodie, Nike trainers, Nike white socks. Can't go wrong with Nike round here.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/10/2023 16:18

Around here it’s mainly Nike, albeit dd went out with a 15 yo boy for a few weeks, who leant her an Abercrombie and fitch hoodie and she never gave it back despite my telling her she should - probs because he didn’t wear it…

She also went out with another 16 yo boy for a few weeks and he wore Nike shorts and t in synthetic fabrics with tech fleece jackets and tech fleece trackies for cooler weather.

Shoes - Nike Jordan’s or airforce 1. White Nike socks.

florenceandthemac · 17/10/2023 16:25

Every teenage boy I see (plus also my DS age 9...!) is wearing Nike tech/Nike Miler, Montirex, Monterrain & Berghaus clothes, and On Cloud trainers. My DS also thinks "grey and black is cool" because he sees all the older lads dressed in just these colours.
So my advice would be to just choose any grey and black outfit in JD Sports, from the brands above, and a pair of On trainers 😁

Stickortwister · 17/10/2023 16:42

You cannot go wrong with a plain grey t shirt and Nike or addidas trackie football bottoms in that horrible shiny fabric or some black cargos. Or a hoodie with discrete under armour Nike or Adidas branding
Does he have no idea what he wants to wear? The head to toe Nike look is popular here in Suffolk but might be inappropriate in other areas.
Then trainers.... If u have cash to splash then nik or addidas ones.

smooththecat · 17/10/2023 16:43

Balaclavas round here 😂
