What do teenage boys wear?

My partner has a 14 year old son, who is in full teenager mode 😁
The school has a non uniform day on Friday and my partner has asked me to see if I can find out what teenagers are wearing these days, as his son lives in cheap joggers and a plain t-shirt at home and doesn’t ever go out with his friends. His Dad doesn’t want him to get picked on for not being cool and is willing to splash a little bit of cash (not designer gear but sports brands sort of thing) but his son isn’t being very forthcoming about what he wants to wear or what his friends are wearing. Can anyone help with some suggestions? My son is only 7 so I'm not quite there yet!

My 15 yr old son wears joggers at home but when he meets friends he mostly wears black cotton cargo trousers (ripped or unripped) and a white Uniqlo t shirt with a monochrome design, almost like a uniform! Black hoodie if cold.

DiscoBeat · 17/10/2023 17:42

(also white Airforces)

DiscoBeat · 17/10/2023 17:48

@florin my son has this coat and unfortunately it got stolen at school :-(

If anyone has any links to slightly less expensive but acceptable coats (lightweight and warm without being an oven) I'd be grateful! He won't wear the one I bought him from GoOutdoors because it has a little bit of blue in the hood, it's 'crinkly sounding' and is basically for old men, apparently. I didn't have any street cred at school and know what that felt like so I want to help (without losing another £200 coat!)

CrasyoDrago · 17/10/2023 17:52

gen z around here 😂

Teenagers now are Gen Z still? Do you mean fit millennials?

Silverfoxlady · 17/10/2023 17:55

My son answered for me, he is 14.

‘I like wearing joggers, so I wear them at school too. If he likes joggers, he should wear them.’

We don’t wear labels in our house, just Next stuff. Hope this helps.

Branleuse · 17/10/2023 17:57

My teenagers like sports brands mainly. Adidas, Nike, puma etc. The sort of stuff you get in JD sports, but we usually get it cheaper in tkmaxx, sports direct or charity shops.

@DiscoBeat There was no way I was spending £250 on an 11 year olds coat. I searched Vinted, eBay and Facebook market place and found one which we picked up the very next day in perfect condition for £100. At his new secondary the parents are extremely social (even more than primary) and we meet up for matches every Wednesday and for drinks before Friday pick up each week to catch up and nearly all the parents had got them secondhand in fact it is quite the badge of honor among the Mum’s to get a good deal on one.

My son is the same as yours and has always rejected every single coat and refused to wear one even in snow 🙄 but he wears the North Face one with pride so I thought £100 was worth it.

orangeclubsarebest · 17/10/2023 18:01

Adidas, Nike, Puma tracksuit and trainers. Stone Island. Armani. Boss. Champion.

Vinted is my friend.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 17/10/2023 18:15

Our two are really not particularly fashion conscious 15 year olds. North Face, Nike, Under Armour and any sort of outdoor brand is preferred by the "cooler" one. North Face prices make me weep, so he doesn't have any currently. One of his favourite things is a cheap manky fleece from Decathlon... He wouldn't dream of spending any of his own money on mere clothes.

The other would wear character/cartoon type stuff all day every day, but doesn't at school cos he'll get ripped. He likes plain black tshirts. These we get from Primark or similar.

They both wear jeans or joggers. They both wear hoodies.

They don't care about trainers. One wears Vans and the other Adidas bog standards.

Apart from the North Face puffer brigade, fashion doesn't seem to be that much of a big deal amongst their peers where we are. When I was at school you got torn into for having shit PE trainers!

You need some input from the child really. I think this might be more about your partner's insecurities than DSS?

CharlotteBog · 17/10/2023 18:15

Do you know why he doesn't ever go out with friends or have his own opinion on what he wants to wear?
If he's happy in joggers and a t shirt, his Dad getting him "trendy clothes so he doesn't get picked on" will give the message that the boy isn't up to scratch or that it isn't ok to just be who he is.
What has he worn at other non uniform days?

pleasestoprainingplease · 17/10/2023 19:35

Nike dri fit or nike tech fleece and air force trainers here SE London... the handy thing is they dry so quickly!

throughgrittedteeth · 17/10/2023 19:37

I second the PP who said joggers and nice trainers and almost exclusively Nike if they can get away with it.

NotMeNoNo · 17/10/2023 19:46

Hoody. Sports brand like Adidas, Nike are ok. Or the Superdry ones with pile fleece lining.

One of my DC only wears unbranded black clothes or band merch, the other various mismatched hoodies and joggers. There will be plenty of kids who don't care about brands.

DrCoconut · 17/10/2023 19:55

Chinos are for nerds here. My DS aged 12 is not fashion conscious but he wouldn't wear chinos. It's joggers and hoodies for non uniform at his school.

sekift · 17/10/2023 19:59

I won't let mine wear tracksuits out the house...so it's jeans, branded top (either sports or skate brands) and trainers like Nikes. And hoodies, all the hoodies!

NotAnotherPylon · 17/10/2023 20:17

I won't let mine wear tracksuits out the house.

Really??

Anyway, DS1 is 15 and wears ridiculous baggy combat trousers, trainers, slim fitting t shirts and a hoodie or bomber jacket. He cares not a jot about brands.

sekift · 17/10/2023 20:23

@NotAnotherPylon really. I'm sure my Granny was the same about jeans Grin

DiscoBeat · 17/10/2023 21:47

@Florin thanks very much, that's a great idea, I hadn't thought of Vinted. I did want to get him something a bit nicer as it wasn't his fault it was stolen. I'll have a look now!

Badgerstmary · 20/10/2023 20:57

Ds 15 wears jeans or slim cargo trousers with a River Island or Hollister T-shirt in predominantly black or white, a surf brand style hoodie (not Superdry), or Jack Wills jumper, with airforce. He used to like JD when he was 13ish but now says it’s chavvy.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 20/10/2023 20:59

Round here it's Nike, Under Armour, and North Face

herownworstenemy · 21/10/2023 07:12

My 15yo DS loves converse but has flat feet so has moved on to Nike trainers for comfort but plain white nothing colourful. white Nike socks like they all seem to wear but also some really cool vans socks (he loves quirky socks). He has a Nike hoodie which is good but nothing more, head to toe Nike is try hard apparently. He has a grey Nicce hoodie he bought on sale & wears all the time. Under Armour, Lonsdale or Hollister tracksuit bottoms or shorts (he's still in shorts 🥶) a few Carhart bits, a couple of Napapajiri tees but mostly band tees or plain black or white unbranded. Jeans have gone from smart into baggy rangy looking this year. A few Ralph Lauren shirts he bought on sale. He is very fussy about his coat, it has to be duvet-like to snuggle into but he says puffas & North Face jackets are for wannabe roadmen (I had no idea what that is). Apart from one item he owns he'd never wear anything with a massive logo, they have to be tiny if at all. He wouldn't wear Stone Island or Superdry. Most of his stuff he gets from Asos sale, H&M etc. Its not about the brands, its about comfort & looking snuggly.

His friends all dress the same & they're at a mix of public school, grammar & comp. For the label fans Stussy seems to be the holy grail but I've never seen any of them in it.
