My daughter has just bought this, with her own money, from Shein. She loves it, DH and I don't think it's appropriate for a just turned 15 year old. Don't get me wrong, she looks stunning in it but personally I think it's more suited to an 18 year old going clubbing. And to add, I'm all for women wearing what they want but I was just hoping she'd opt for something a bit classier. Although at 15 I'm not sure I understood class. AIBU?

Also, please help on how to discuss age appropriate clothing with her. (She earns her own money and buys some of her own stuff).

unfortunately my 15 yr DD would wear that also - to a party. I agree it’s not totally age appropriate and would love her to dress more modestly but she and her friends all wear things like that - some worse which i don’t allow!

it’s your house - so your rules but stuff like this is totally aimed at 15 year old girls so pick your battles and I’ve seen kids leave the house in one outfit and then change into another outfit that their parents had banned

I personally think it's unsuitable for a 15 year old because it gives the wrong message or gains unwanted attention.

It has come to light in this post that I am very bad for thinking that way which I apologise for.

So could anyone against their 15 year old wearing this please give me the reason it is unsuitable

As an aside those photos on Shein look very heavily photoshopped especially the rear view! Looks like Jessica Rabbit lol.

While I wouldn't be keen on a 15 year old wearing it I have frequently seen girls that age wearing similar and I don't really see how you can dictate what she wears.

OP, my DD is a bit younger than yours but I’ve had to have a conversation with her about age appropriate clothes, namely bikinis. She bought some tanga style bikinis, basically the ones that look like nappies/pouch things that you can narrow as much as you like. I think they are for 18+ year olds going off on their first holiday with their mates, not for year nines.
I told her that although she should be able to wear anything and as little she likes with no hassle whatsoever, as her mum I do not feel that she is ready nor mature enough to handle the unwanted and unwarranted attention she would get from men in those kind of bikinis. She already has grown men looking at her when fully dressed and I want to punch each and every one of them all in the face.

God it's disgusting isn't it. I got most of my unwanted beeps from vans and lorries from 12-15.
Scummy men.
I'm glad I don't have girls as I'd be getting into a lot of confrontations.

Hey there! So personally, I don't believe on 'age appropriate clothing'. If you don't let her wear things like this at 15, by the time she's 18 she'll be wearing more revealing things just because she finally has the freedom to (that's what I did, and my siblings, and all of my friends) its a natural instinct that as soon as your no longer bounded by the rules you break them. I also personally think this is suitable for a 15 year old anyway, it's what I wore as a 15 year old and it's definitely made for them as its the teenage trend style atm.

However, if you really don't like it then you should try talk to her but don't be so harsh about it. Just say it's okay for certain things but not other things, that's how me and my mom always compromised. I couldn't wear clothes like this in front of family, but I could with my friends etc. Mother and daughter relationships shouldn't be about rules, but compromise all the way.

I think people are misunderstanding the 'certain messages' post.

OF BLOODY COURSE. It's the blokes fault if he makes any judgement on the dress and the person inside it. Doesn't stop them doing it though, does it?

Good luck with choosing any item of clothing to wear than no-one judges you for or has any thoughts about.

School uniform was often sexualised in the media when I was at school, and still is sometimes today. Men stared at me and verbally harrassed me when I was wearing it from the age of 12.
