Hi all,
My daughter is showing signs of periods arriving soon and I wondered if there is any advice you would give to me that you would have liked yourself?
Pads, tampons, knickers, practical advice, anything really?

You have to be a troll!

Hoppinggreen · 12/06/2023 19:36

If you think this is a troll just report.
In the meantime I would urge caution in sharing experiences relating to teenage girls and periods

Choccymumma · 12/06/2023 19:37

I've asked to delete my thread, what a nasty, sinister place mumsnet has become. I wasn't asking for detail just basic advice on how to support my daughter.

I think you should share your anger for the pervs that have made people suspicious

Choccymumma · 12/06/2023 19:40

I am. It's disgraceful.

I would send a link to something like the NHS website and sites like Always or Tampax that she can read in her own time. Tell her what you've sent and why and that is she has any questions, just ask.

BookLover7777 · 12/06/2023 19:41

Jumping in before the thread is taken down - invest in period pants. So much easier for them to just wear and not have to think about rushing to loo when they're at school all day.

Will look at those, thank you.

I’ve just been through this with my daughter who started unusually young so was still at primary.

Period pants! Expensive but they last all day so no need for her to faff around at school with taking a pad or tampon in. Or help her think through how she’ll get the pad into the toilets if it’s going to be something she’s embarrassed about. (I guess this was more of an issue for my primary aged DD as she didn’t have a blazer with pockets)

If she doesn’t want to use tampons get her a period swimming costume or bikini if she swims.

Weedoormatnomore · 12/06/2023 20:03

Times appear to have changed some girls are a lot more open and less embarrassed like we where in my day. Just be open with your daughter make sure she has something in her bag incase she starts most seem to use a little purse to carry tampons or pads in. My daughter struggled with pain so now also carrys paracetamol just 2 tablets incase she needs them

Choccymumma · 12/06/2023 20:33

Thank you all.
I'm going to look at period pants, they sound amazing. Do they not need anything with them?

Evening, everyone. We had to delete some troll hunting early on here, so we just wanted to pop in and reassure anyone, in case it were needed, that we've had a look at the OP and there's nothing we can see to make us think she isn't genuine.

She had asked us to remove the thread but has kindly agreed to give it a go so please do help her out with some advice and suggestions. This is a topic so many of us need a bit of help with and it would be a shame to let the fact that we occasionally have the odd troll through on this subject stop parents from discussing such an important everyday topic. We like to think this is the kind of thing Mumsnet is here for in the first place.

Thank you to all who have already posted with ideas. Flowers

It will depend on her flow i suppose! As a teenager my mon made us use pads and i hated it, my flow was quite heavy as a teenager already so for me it is tampons all the way… she will learn what she prefers i guess, good luck 😊

QueenAstrid · 12/06/2023 21:10

Another vote for period pants! My DD was very self conscious about putting pads in other people’s bins, or would worry in case they didn’t have a bin so she carried nappy bags with her so she could wrap up used pads and bring them home.

Magicshoppingtrolley · 12/06/2023 21:13

I set up a stock of towels in the bathroom cupboard and showed her how they work/what to do with them when they’re used. There was a stash of tampons in there but she’s not keen (and I think she would forget). Once she started I got period pants delivered - great idea but for light to moderate days.

above all I’ve made it all normal so she can talk to me or her dad about period pain or leaks or whatever.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 12/06/2023 21:13

Definitely period pants

mybestchildismycat · 12/06/2023 21:16

Lilets do a nice teen starter pack that contains a few different pads and teen tampons, along with a little booklet.

I'd also suggest having a few period pants on standby so she has a fuss free solution to use while she figures out what works for her.

Hi, following this thread with interest, but can I ask what signs have you found? I feel a bit clueless. My 10 year old has Pubic hair and boobs growing but has had for a year. What do I need her to look out for? Ive talked to her about periods, and she goes to school with a little pack of spare pants, pads, period pants

Mykittensmittens · 12/06/2023 21:20

Modibodi ‘red’ did a kit thing - a couple of pairs of the pants and a booklet, and some nice bits and bobs in a box.

lilets do teen pads.

I got both the above in andvance and put them in a basket from TKMaxx which had something like ‘my stuff’ written on the side. She uses the basket to keep her stash in, inside the wardrobe. One year in she absolutely prefers the pants and the pads are just a backup she carries in her school bag. She’s got 5 pairs of modibodi now and a couple from primark.

anon199900 · 12/06/2023 21:42

Modibodi is an amazing retailer - as a 38 year old I only wish these pants existed when I was at school. They are the best quality.

Run4it2 · 12/06/2023 21:46

Lilet did a teen starter kit when my daughter started which was great - included a tin to keep things in. Period pants are great in terms of ensuring there are no leaks - can be worn with pads as well which can feel more comfortable on heavier days. Also a declaration that I would buy her chocolate if she was feeling rough (I get a real craving on my period). My son then started demanding period chocolate too...
