Bit Grim - Girls: Do you expect them to soak their own pants after their period?

I'm taking over the teen board today, it would seem...

This is a bit grim, but I have asked DD (12) now she's started her periods, to put any stained pants into a bowl of hot water and vanish by the washing machine.

Seems she can't be bothered and either "forgets" or just slings them in a bowl of water for me to sort out.

I don't really see why I should. Am I being harsh?

I can't remember having ever done this bucket thing. if my mum had asked me i would have been very embarrasses to think there was a 'special bucket'.

I think i remember just saying to mum, 'mum i have some orrible pants as i am on my period' type thing, and she would tell me to pop them in a plastic bag, or wrap them a bit in an old towel, and she would sort it.

She prob threw really bad ones away, when i first started periods, yet i canalso remember ditching afew pairs myself.

I would maybe say 'look, ok the bucket's going', but you must be responsible and let me have them to deal with, other wise the buckets the best solution i can think of'?

I washed out my own pants. Didn't like the thought of my mum doing it for me. I think as she is pretty chilled about having periods and isn't great with her washing etc...it's a good for her to learn to take care of her stuff. You're a great Mum TYG and whatever you do with her will be the right thing

Reminds me of a really embarrassing time with my Dad !
I was a kid who was very clean and always washed my own undies after accidents.
One particularly bad time when I was home alone I discovered that there was no detergent. So I changed and was preparing to go out so left a note addressed to Mum asking that "she got Biotex or something else that would remove blood from clothes from the supermarket"
Ran back upstairs to collect my jacket at which point my Dad came home unexpectedly - read the note and came charging upstairs in a panic to see what "kind of accident I had been in !"
Cue a very embarrassed 12 year old who slammed the door in his face and told him it "was a personal matter !!"
