Weighted blankets for teens. Too heavy?

Dd 13 has requested a weighted blanket for Christmas. She sent me the link and I ordered it, last minute shopping so didn't pay too much attention to weight. Anyway, it's just been delivered and so heavy, it's 10kg. Would that be dangerous to sleep with a blanket that heavy?
She told me that it needs to be heavy else doesn't have the desired results

Many thanks in advance

They're supposed to be roughly 10% of your body weight.
That said, my DD's one is 7kg and she is 50kg. She's never had an issue with it.
I have no idea if they'd be dangerous if they're too heavy.

Is she very small for her age? If not I suspect it'll be fine.
I've bought 7kg ones for 2 of mine ... they both weigh around 7 stone each.
I think it might go on body weight?
Don't know too much about them either tbh!

She's about 9 stone.

I think 10kg is too heavy. for that weight (9stone is 57Kg)
Even 5kg ones are pretty heavy.

Athenen0ctua · 16/12/2022 13:39

It's about 10% of your weight, we both have 5kg ones, DS was a 43kg 13 year old when we got them.

I'm 8 and a half stone and have a 5kg one.

PlusLaMeme · 16/12/2022 13:40

I'm about 60kg and use a 5kg one. I find it just right, I don't know if a heavier one might be a bit suffocating?

As an aside, I'm an insomniac and the weighted blanket has been an absolute godsend! Especially when combined with a weighted eyemask that my daughter gifted me.

My DS 12 is fine with an adult one

Haveahappyholiday · 16/12/2022 14:40

I was looking for one and some of the reviews said they were too heavy and it did put me off.

There is no standard 'adult' size. An adult may be 50kg so need 5kg, or 100kg so need 10kg by the general 10% guideline.

Could you bring it back & switch it?
I hope the ones I've bought mine aren't too heavy at 7kg too 🙈

LaTangerina · 16/12/2022 18:36

Too late to bring mine back I'll just have to hope they're fine!

I'd say up to 15% would be fine, so as long as they are about 50kg, especially if still growing. 7kg would be a better weight for DS now at 16, but would have been too heavy when he was only 13 and 43kg!

My kids are about 7 stone which is around 45 kg ... hoping they'll be ok! They are still growing too.
Thanks for the help.
