I haven’t used my Mumsnet for a long time and I’m not sure I’m asking in the right place but some of you may have some pointers for me.

DS would like a little job whilst he’s at college. I’ve been on the lookout for a while just to see how much is around. I never see supermarkets advertising for jobs for students (he only wants a few hrs a week) but I know they exist. I feel like I’m missing how these jobs are advertised. In my day, we’d have sent a CV in to the store and things generally happened but I presume that’d get ignored these days? Does anyone have an insight/ experience with this. I’m thinking this is prime time for youngster recruitment now that they’ll be a losing a cohort to uni shortly. Thanks in advance

The youngsters do get the same pay, but they are doing the same job, they have to be switched on, shelf stacking - or replenish as they call it has to be done correctly, every time. Checkout also is not straightforward, all the offers and discounts have to be handled, their aptitude has got to be good, so the pay is not great, it’s the discounts you get that is the attraction 20% in my case. That aside it is a nice place to work IMO.

We have a local facebook jobs page where jobs get advertised. People can also post if they are looking for work. Theres a massive shortage of lifeguards at moment so if he's a strong swimmer then paying for a lifeguarding course can be a good investment - and usually pays above min wage. Xmas jobs will start to be advertised soon as well.
