Swimming and periods

My daughter is 12 and swims several times a week. She hasn't started her period yet, but could do soon. What do your dc use when they swim, please?

I've been reading about period underwear, as that is something I've never used. Would a pair of period bikini bottoms (if there is such a thing), under a normal swimming costume work? Also, she is a little smaller than average, so any suitable brand advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

My daughter used tampons.

Loads of brands who do the period pants, also do swimming costumes. I use modi body. Game changer. Our daughters are so lucky compared to us!!

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that she would probably find tampons a bit tricky at first.

You'll probably find that she doesn't bleed in the water. My dd did lots of swimming and she managed with sanitary towels before and after. Friends with dds found the same thing too.

Tampons are ideal, but my dd certainly wasn't ready to use them straight away.

We haven’t investigated period swimwear yet (DD has only had one period so far), but with summer holidays around the corner I’ve been thinking about it. I don’t think she’ll be ready to try tampons yet, which might be your concern too hence your question.
Brands: having bought period pants for myself and my daughter from various brands, my favourites are Wuka and Modibodi. Cheeky Wipes are fine too, but not of the same quality. I also just bought some M&S ones and was very impressed -not used them yet, but they feel good compared to the others we have.
Not tried period swimwear yet from any brand, but I intend getting DD a pair of bikini bottoms from Wuka or Modibodi.

DD has a modibodi swimming costume. They also do bikinis.

My girls both swam, and used tampons from the first period. Quickly got used to them, as they didn’t know any different.

2 teen girls. Modibodi swim wear. Adult size one piece in black so suitable for school lessons. (Had a terrible time getting the right size. Adult 12M fitted when they were in kids clothes size 12-13 / 13-14 ish)

I used tampons from 12, my DD's had the option to use them from when they started (I put a variety of products in the bathroom so they could choose) one did straight away, the other prefers not to

My daughter did kayaking but before she started her periods. I remember one of her friends (who took the sport far more seriously than dd Ever did and was kayaking 4 times a week) starting her periods and using tampons from the very beginning, I remember her mum worrying about it on the river bank, but the girl took it completely in her stride and was fine with them. They were 11 at the time.

I used tampons when I used to swim. Would recommend a mooncup over tampons though. So much better for body and environment.

DD is 13 and uses the Modibodi swimsuit I bought her. It's been great and luckily I got it in a sale

I should imagine tampons or mooncup is the only hygienic way to go on this. if she does loose in the water which can happen just as it can in the bath then there's a possibility it can get into the water even if using special pants or pads. Not very nice for other swimmers in my opinion. i really do wish science would come up with something so periods could become a thing of the past they really are a complete nuisance for us women and girls.

DD has friends who do club swimming. All wear. period swimsuits, on strong days together with a tampon.

DD wears tampons on holiday and I will get her period bikini bottoms for a watersport camp to double up.

Can praise midi body enough - wait for them to come on offer. I wasn’t going to bugger around. In the end I brought her 8 pairs of black period pants and one period swimming costume. No san pro in this house.
she changed every morning and bunged the overnight one in and then again before bed -
