Has anyone got a teenager who is pressing to go to Newquay after GCSEs? Is it a good idea?

Any adult supervision?

Binge ex I think. But I might be being cynical

scorpio1 · 11/01/2008 15:00

i wouldn't like to go there at night, and im 23.

scorpio1 · 11/01/2008 15:00

There was a thread about this recently which had mixed opinions.

I would be happy to let him go to anywhere but Newquay (No disrespect to Newquay). I do want him to know I trust his judgement etc he's very sensible. But it seems to be a mecca for these kids and the impression I've got is that its got totally out of hand, not just kids but loads of stag nights too. Is it as bad as I think? (I have a 14yr old girl too who will want to go after her GCSEs as well).

it is as bad as you think. probably worse. something for after A-levels IMHO.

We have said "no" to DS and that we would be happy for him to go to another place with friends camping or something. Though disappointed, he actually is very relaxed about it - he may go on a walking holiday with school(!???!!!! oh the fickleness of youth!).
It was the confrontation of having to say "no" that got us all wound up. He can go when he is older if he must. Thanks for all your comments they were very helpful.

I'm with scorpio1 on this, I live near there too, and avoid it like the plague in summer, and I'm nearly 30! It's not Newquay itself, but the hordes of weirdo types that seem to appear in holiday season.. accidentally featured in an episode of 'Booze Britain' once, as I dared to venture out to Newquay on SIL's hen night!

moljam · 18/01/2008 13:23

were nearish newquay and i get bit worried about nights out there.im almost 30.it can be nice place in day but at night its completly different.clubs are pulling parlours, fights all over the place.i wouldnt tbh.

Pimmpom · 18/01/2008 13:44

I will be ready when dd asks in a couple of years after reading this!

LOL at Mymeems "accidently appearing in Booze Britain"

Mymeems · 18/01/2008 17:52

Pimmpom, what makes it worse is that I was dressed as a naughty nurse! Oh the shame...

Pimmpom · 18/01/2008 19:09

Oh Mymeems, you've really cheered me up tonight

3littlefrogs · 19/01/2008 14:40

OMG -ds1 went to Newquay aith his friends after GCSEs. He had a nice time, and the owner of the place where he stayed wrote to me saying what a nice, well behaved bunch of kids they were. I honestly had no idea it was so bad. This was a few years ago now. Was it always this bad???

grittypud · 07/02/2008 13:23

I am the mum who started the other thread. I was suprised at the % of mumsnetters who would probably have let her go but the comments on trust etc were very useful . the recent comments here are mostly against. I still would not be happy about newquay but possibly another holidayarea or when 18 not 14 0r 16. However my situation resolved itself , dd2 told dd1 that it wasn't worth the argument to go !! and we havn't heard any more.Suspect that not everybody is going depite revised lower cost so she isn't left out on her own. Now reminded I will ask why, now the heat has gone out of the situation !!
Normally I would tackled this with her head on but sort of ignoring it until time passed seems to have been a calmer solution this time !!!(hmm)

I was just going to offer my advice on this saying it wasn't that long ago I wanted to go, then realised it was nearly 10 years since GCSEs! I'm in denial about my age already, how sad.

Anyway, I would back up the 'anywhere but newquay' views, a lot of my friends went (strict mother wouldn't let me; in fact, don't think I even bothered asking!) and it just seemed nothing but trouble with drink and drugs. People went to other places - falmouth, west wales etc - without nearly the same problems.
