Car Insurance for 17yr olds. Can anyone recommend a company???

DD is 17 in a few weeks, and is having Driving Lessons for her birthday. I kept our 3rd car, an old Peugeot 106, just for this time, and am now trying to get quotes.

Some companies say I HAVE to transfer ownership to her, as she WILL be the main driver (er, we use it for running dog & parking at swimming pool etc, she will have the odd trip).

Others CANNOT quote until she IS 17! She WILL be in 2 weeks - I promise she won't touch the car until then.....

Quotes range from £1900!! to £825, and waiting ca,, back from a sane sounding broker. The car is only worth £500.

Anyone else been through this yet - who insured you??

I imagine quotes would be stupidly huge cos under 18's have the most crashes. Its why the driving age may be raised to 18.
This is wasn't you asdked but I'd buy her a bike or bus pass. Not sure I'd be happy with a 17yo driving.

I think it is easier to pass whilst you are young, and will be a good investment for the future. I am scared about letting her drive, but want her to have proper lessons with a bit of extra practice with us in the baby car.

She WILL get the bus for town (costs too much to park) and can walk to school in 15 mins. She is sensible (dread to think about DS starting...) but if we can help her learn now before student uni debts kick in, and she can get no claims or driving experience to lesten the blow when she has to pay for herself, I'm sure she'll benefit.

Any recommendations?

I think you will be looking at an average of £1000 unfortunately. Its cos of her age, nothing to do with the value of the car. Even mine when I last owned a car was £360 and I've been driving 20 years with full no claims.
What about having her as named driver with you as owner. Don't mention the fact it will be her car.

It is also worth knowing that you can only get 3rd party insurance for young drivers so do not be conned into paying more.

I put ds onto my insurance as a named driver. I have fully comp, and have been driving for over 30 years and never made a claim, but he can only have 3rd party, even if I pay for FC for him.

Also be aware that if they do have an accident it is generally presumed that it is the young driver's fault. DS had a bump a few weeks ago - he was actually stationary at the time, signalling and waiting to turn right, and a speeding driver hit him. He was held equally responsible, and the insurance company said there was no point in even arguing because of his age. Interestingly, the quote from the repair garage was for 2 grand when they thought it was going to be an insurance claim - went down to 400 pounds when we were paying it ourselves. No wonder premiums are so expensive. The whole thing is a racket, but we have no choice.

Classic car insurance would be much cheaper. If you are lucky you could find an old fiesta for example still in good condition for that sort of money (£500) and insure it through a classic car insurer....

Just an idea...

A nice broker has just got the price down to £570 with DD as 2nd named driver on my policy.

Thats better

My pug is probably nearly a classic (J reg)

Check This thread for advice Milliways - also, if you find a good quote go though Quidco if possible to get some cashback - I got £120 back from LTSB this year

Don't remind me! We also had a quote for our 17 yr old to drive P reg Ford Escort Est - wait for it - £2,000 with Direct Line. He can't drive mine - T reg VW Sharan 7 seater MPV as its class 11 insurance.

I decided he was going to use the bus (thank God!) but I still would like him to learn for himself really, he would find it easier to find a job a bit further afield and I won't be a taxi service as I am for his sister.

I am going to buy the provisional as his dad is thinking of buying a smaller engine car to get to work in preston, at the moment its costing a fortune in diesel, if he gets an 1.1 or 1.3 it won't be as bad as the 1.8TD!

Try Tesco but DD would have to be second driver to get reasonable quote. We did this with DD till this year when she took her car down to London. Because she had been on the insurance she got three years no claims from Tesco as she then was the named driver. She now pays round about £250 fully comp. She is 21.

I can't get my 17yo onto my insurance either, have got a 206cc just over a year old which was hoping to share with her to save getting a 3rd car. Also can't put her on the LandRover even tho it is about 120 years old. Am with Norwich Union.

My car is 7 years old and is only a 1600 but because it is a two seater they would not insure her for Christmas.

Some companies lower the cost of insurance for youngsters if they do the Pass Plus which is something they can do after they pass their test and I think it has to be done within in the year. Its worth looking into
