I don't like the way my son talks

He's copying this from somewhere ? Talking in a ridiculous accent. Sounds like :
Man, innit, nah,
If he says "actually", he pronounces it "actulee"
His friends and family don't talk like this.
I keep correcting his speech but it continues and is driving me crazy. It sounds horrible. Only place I guess he could be copying it from could be You Tube?

I reckon just grit your teeth and don't react. Sadly, he is unlikely to stop because his mum doesn't like it. In fact, that might even encourage him.

sadpapercourtesan · 16/01/2022 18:44

My 17yo does it as well. I find it adorable, much to his annoyance Grin

Honestly, grin and bear it OP, he will grow out of it.

DinaofCloud9 · 16/01/2022 18:44

Does it really matter? All teens have their own type of language.

littlebilliie · 16/01/2022 18:46

It's "street" and quite funny I would laugh at mine if they did this. It's their attempt to fit in. Fine out of earshot but not okay home

FasterthanBolt · 16/01/2022 18:46

He'll grow out of it, don't worry!

JessicaKenny2018 · 16/01/2022 18:46

My son does exactly this @Hamjamwich.
I've taken to ignoring it or doing it too when I talk to him you should see his face 😂I might take up talking the same way in front of his friends 😂

Hamjamwich · 16/01/2022 18:47

But why? I'm very ordinary but I speak properly. None of his friends do this

OP posts:
JessicaKenny2018 · 16/01/2022 18:49

No clue as to why and we live in rural Norfolk so definitely no one speaks that way but we just smile I'm sure they will all grow out of it

Bonheurdupasse · 16/01/2022 18:49

Try, really try, to speak the same way when he’s around.
That will stop him!

sadpapercourtesan · 16/01/2022 18:49

Are you sure none of his friends do it? I bet they do!

JessicaKenny2018 · 16/01/2022 18:50

@Bonheurdupasse exactly what I do he looks like he wants the ground to swallow him up when I speak the same

neerg · 16/01/2022 18:51

Just keep talking to him as you usually would, he will come round eventually (and probably knows how to talk properly when it is needed).
We have taken to talking to our cat using teen speak 🤪🤪🤪🤪

Yes I feel the only thing even slightly likely to work is this.

Even better when he is with his friends.

Hey DS do yous wan summ coffee? brap brap

pilates · 16/01/2022 18:52

He’ll grow up and realise he sounds a twonk

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 16/01/2022 18:54

It's v annoying and not helped by the fact that KFC ads and the like have adopted it

Hamjamwich · 16/01/2022 18:55

We live 160 miles away from London !
I do wonder if You Tube could be an issue ?

OP posts:
IHateCoronavirus · 16/01/2022 18:56

I bought him a birthday card which said “It’s my Birthday innit?” on the front. Stopped it dead! Grin

sadpapercourtesan · 16/01/2022 18:57

OP we don't live anywhere near London either. It's teenage culture, it comes from their music, YouTube, social media, Netflix, and each other. Teenagers have always gone in for tribal language and stylised (ridiculous) behaviour, it's a normal developmental stage and it will pass.

I bet his mates do talk like that doe, innit.

Just ignore it, or add a few street slang words in yourself - leng, peng, styll, fam, Main G, big up.

secreteatingteen · 16/01/2022 18:58

It's almost certainly coming from places like YouTube/tiktok etc. But it's very normal. I remember my parents trying to correct my speech as a teen. Ignore it. He'll grow out of it. Reminds me of Kevin and Perry when they try to go full Mad-chestaaaarrrrrr😁

You sound like you think he's doing it accidentally and so if you can just find and eliminate the source it'll stop. He's not, he's doing it on purpose and the fact it annoys you is not just not a deterrent, it's part of the point - he doesn't want to do things his mum approves of!
blyn · 16/01/2022 18:59

You don't say how old your son is but what you describe is not unusual, I can remember it with mine years ago, and some of his friends. Try to ignore it, he'll outgrow it and will speak properly when he needs to. There's nothing worse than a mother correcting her child's speech, my mother used to do that with me (what's more she had no idea, her pronunciation of vowels was terrible).

HardbackWriter · 16/01/2022 18:59

Also his friends probably do it when they're not talking to their mate's mum (you) - and he probably doesn't do it when he talks to their parents either!

Rno3gfr · 16/01/2022 19:01

It’s Tic Tock, I’m sure. So cringey. He’ll look back one day and feel like a dick. For now all you can do is ignore or imitate.
