I don't like the way my son talks

He's copying this from somewhere ? Talking in a ridiculous accent. Sounds like :
Man, innit, nah,
If he says "actually", he pronounces it "actulee"
His friends and family don't talk like this.
I keep correcting his speech but it continues and is driving me crazy. It sounds horrible. Only place I guess he could be copying it from could be You Tube?

About 2 years ago I bulped onto my teenaged cousin and his little gang of mates near asda. I was greeted with "aiiiit blud. Hook me up wiv some juice innit"

We live in a very small northern town where residents typically have a very broad lancashire accent. I was howling. (And I didn't buy him any booze once I had established wtf he was on about).

Depending on your DS' personality, either ignore or some gentle mocking and it'll soon wear off.

You should have come out with a carton of orange 'juice' 🤣

@HardbackWriter

Also his friends probably do it when they're not talking to their mate's mum (you) - and he probably doesn't do it when he talks to their parents either!
This!
blahblahx · 16/01/2022 19:04

Just start talking back like that, he'll soon get the message.

Go up to him and ask WAG1?

WellThisIsShit · 16/01/2022 19:05

Yes it’s ‘street innit’? My son actually doesn’t like it very much but feels the pressure to normalise or stand out, it’s hard for them.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 16/01/2022 19:06

Just start calling him "fam" when talking to him 😁

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/01/2022 19:10

I’d have to tell him to pack it in.

My mum drops her H’s and some colleagues drop their T’s (even with people’s names).

It actually hurts my ears to listen to it. The sounds jar with each other and the words don’t flow.

Oldtiredfedup · 16/01/2022 19:12

I have a rule to avoid imposing my idea of ‘should’ onto others: if it’s not harming anyone or damaging property then it’s not worth commenting on

Giggorata · 16/01/2022 19:16

Your teenage son actually talks?
Mine wouldn’t approach actual words, just grunts and monosyllabic noises.

Seriously, he will grow out of it.
It's from a long time ago now, but do have a look at old YouTube clips of Harry Enfield's wonderful Kevin and Perry, the teenagers. Hilarious and totally accurate.

TheWeeDonkey · 16/01/2022 19:21

@IHateCoronavirus

I bought him a birthday card which said “It’s my Birthday innit?” on the front. Stopped it dead! Grin
Ace Grin

Mine used to do this. I went through a good while being "cus" and "fam" I find the best response is "innit doe?" haha. Patience OP they do grow out of it.

JDaytona · 16/01/2022 19:22

Do it back to him.

BrinksmansEntry · 16/01/2022 19:23

Bet you his mates do talk like he does, just put on their best voice in front of you.

Think Kevin and Perry, Mrs Patterson

Tempusfudgeit · 16/01/2022 19:23

'Awright, our Kevin?'

OMG this! 🤣 show him the clip!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ohyesiam · 16/01/2022 19:26

I remember noticing in London in the 90s that all the kids black, white , Asian spoke patios.
Now I live in rural Somerset and the kids do an amazing mix of deep Somerset and Jamaican patois. It’s evolved since new bits since the 90 s , but it’s basically the same.
I imagine that when your son’s friends are with just their age group they all do it.

EstoPerpetua · 16/01/2022 19:30

He will grow out of it!

I pretend I can't understand them with it gets too much. They usually laugh and revert back to their usual speech patterns, especially if they're asking for food or money Grin

I've been thinking of starting this thread myself so many times! "Why does my DS14 have this weird Street/London/Gangster accent all of a sudden?!" I'm relieved to hear it's not just him. He's better at stopping it when he gets home now. Weird boys!

Motnight · 16/01/2022 19:34

He is doing it deliberately. His friends will be doing it as well. Smile and ignore 😂

Whatsyourfavouritescarymovie · 16/01/2022 19:38

Drives me mad hearing people talk like that, I know many adults who do it, I tell them to talk properly or not at all, they either shut up or talk normally. Even annoys me when people text type to me, I've blocked anyone who does it, if they can't spell properly, just ring me instead.

MoiraNotRuby · 16/01/2022 19:38

They all do it, its lovely that he is going through adolescence and doing the things teens are meant to do. All part of separating from the family tribe. They form a teenager tribe with their own culture. Then the next phase is becoming their own person and realising they can be Themself as well as being in the family.

Prescottdanni123 · 16/01/2022 19:38

I speak like this. Not sorry.

Prescottdanni123 · 16/01/2022 19:41

Posted too soon.

'Man' and 'nah' are used quite a lot in the region where I am from.

Innit and Actulee aren't words that I really use.

MeredithGreyishblue · 16/01/2022 19:43

My 11 year old has started it. Sounds so daft out if his sheltered, small village mouth. He's not happy when I laugh. I shouldn't really. Bless.
