I don't like the way my son talks

He's copying this from somewhere ? Talking in a ridiculous accent. Sounds like :
Man, innit, nah,
If he says "actually", he pronounces it "actulee"
His friends and family don't talk like this.
I keep correcting his speech but it continues and is driving me crazy. It sounds horrible. Only place I guess he could be copying it from could be You Tube?

OP posts:
Branleuse · 16/01/2022 19:43

Start calling him blud and bro, and give him gang handshakes

NinaDefoe · 16/01/2022 19:45

‘Blud’ 🤣

Holly60 · 16/01/2022 19:46

@HardbackWriter

Also his friends probably do it when they're not talking to their mate's mum (you) - and he probably doesn't do it when he talks to their parents either!
‘Hello Mrs Patterson…’
PasstheBucket89 · 16/01/2022 19:48

Is he saying it un ironically? or just joking around?

my 12 year old does the latter we make a joke of it, just before I shouted down to him as I could hear him rummaging and said "why are you in the kitchen, just had tea?"
"man, got bread, innit!" GrinHmm

were from rural Yorkshire Grin it'll pass.

VioletLemon · 16/01/2022 19:52

God yes, it's bloody tiresome! They do it in Scotland too!! Won't last beyond 19. Just trying to be cool...

iklboo · 16/01/2022 19:58

When he comes in looking nice tell him 'Aiiiiiight. Man you is bare drip, innit'. Preferably in front of his mates.

Why do loads of you seem to get pleasure out of embarrassing your children?

Only a bit. Its joking. It would totally depend on who it was in front of. Im not sure theres any way of not embarrassing your teenager, so might as well have a laugh
EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 16/01/2022 20:10

They grow out of ot. My almost 27 year old and his friends just do it now accasionally to take the piss out of the teens

It's been going on for years

Well if they insist on talking like fools they really should expect a bit of ribbing
Luredbyapomegranate · 16/01/2022 20:34

@sadpapercourtesan

My 17yo does it as well. I find it adorable, much to his annoyance Grin

Honestly, grin and bear it OP, he will grow out of it.

I think ignore it with the odd side order of finding it cute. He will grow out of it (obviously if he’s still doing it when he graduates you might have to have a word Grin)
DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 16/01/2022 20:39

DD has started this. Ting, G, peng, innit, G.
Tedious but all part of growing up trying to be something you're not.

Itsnotalwaysme · 16/01/2022 20:42

My child does this, 13. I was very surprised the first time he referred to me as "fam" but I find it funny now. I'm sure my parents thought the same about me at that age

PippaPoppet · 16/01/2022 20:55

OMG, my son does this and it’s driving me nuts! We have resorted to laughing at him and calling him Fam and Bruv 😂 It winds him up massively. Hopefully it’s just a phase.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 16/01/2022 20:56

@Bonheurdupasse

Try, really try, to speak the same way when he’s around. That will stop him!
This is what l was going to suggest!
JohnnyEyebrows · 16/01/2022 21:06

This is really normal and just needs ignoring or laughing at

My youngest is 15 and all I hear is ...

Love to man

Is it cuz

Man's hungry babes (yes, he will say this to me, his mother)

In a bit

Aight

I mean, it's a phase. It's quite funny. He's mainly putting it on for comic effect anyway

I don't talk back to him like it though as can't be bothered. I just either laugh or ignore it really. It's all harmless stuff

I'm a teacher and can confirm joining in with it stops it dead

Especially if it’s done really badly! 🤣
JohnnyEyebrows · 16/01/2022 21:18

@Itsnotalwaysme oh it's priceless. I can never keep a straight face.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/01/2022 21:21

....How do you all pronounce 'actually'? Am I the only one who doesn't see how that's wrong?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/01/2022 21:23

OP I was going to suggest doing a mic drop whenever you make a statement. Get your DH to join in with cheers and 'whooooaaaaassss' while you walk around all hunched over and lead from the shoulders.

It’s pronounced ac-tue-ally in my accent. I can’t work out how else it is said!
