Armed forces?
Apprenticeship?

Saltyquiche · 22/11/2021 22:20

Apprenticeship

Go see a careers advisor

Hellocatshome · 22/11/2021 22:21

Let him leave and go to college, get an apprenticeship or whatever else he wants to do. No point paying to go to university if you dont actually go.

Ay2k1 · 22/11/2021 22:22

He has a disqualifying disability for joining the armed forces .

Also it’s a degree in the arts he’s doing . He’s already done a lvl 3 collage course

My issue is I don’t want him sat on his ass all day doing f all which is why I made him go to uni as he hadn’t found a job in the 5 months his had since leaving college

Can you give some more info - what degree and where? Why doesn’t he like it? What is he generally interested in? Is he generally a grafter, or a bit drifty? Is he academic, or middling?

flapperdapper · 22/11/2021 22:26

Ask for a temporary withdrawal until he figures out what he wants to do. That way he doesn’t burn bridges but also doesn’t run up an expense while being miserable. He can make a final choice of whether to completely withdraw in a year’s time.

Hellocatshome · 22/11/2021 22:26

Well he doesnt want to go to go to uni so he is going to have to look at alternatives. He could always get a job.

Bluntness100 · 22/11/2021 22:27

Has he been applying for jobs?

Ay2k1 · 22/11/2021 22:28

It’s a degree in the arts can’t remember what specifically in off back of my head he says it’s to much research writing etc his never been good with that sort of stuff anyway

OP posts:
Ay2k1 · 22/11/2021 22:29

From what he’s told me yes

OP posts:
Ay2k1 · 22/11/2021 22:29

That’s what I’ve told him but just got told it’s hard finding work

I’d contact Richmond Fellowship or other charity that helps people with disabilities find employment. It is exceedingly difficult for a person with a disability to find a job, 5 months is not that long to be looking To be honest.

I agree don’t make him take on debt or pay for university if he doesn’t even want to be there.

TedMullins · 22/11/2021 22:31

Some people just don’t suit academia. I didn’t. I was doing a journalism degree that was about 20% practical and 80% academic theory and I didn’t get on with it at all - I quit after the first year but long story short, I am now a journalist. I just knuckled down and started building a portfolio from scratch. What kind of arts is he into? For most artistic jobs a portfolio and contacts are the most important aspects. Could he get a day job and start pursuing his creative interests in his spare time and build up from there?

AsleepOnTheTrain · 22/11/2021 22:31

Don't make it comfy to stay at home. No internet no sky no Xbox.

That wouldn’t help he spends most of his day outside anyway

It’s finding him a day job he didn’t find one in 5 months

What on earth were you thinking forcing him to go to uni when he was never interested?

As for what now, well does he go out, have friends, play video games, have a mobile phone? How does he fund them? UC is only £60 a week. Take a bit off him for board and lodgings, hopefully the lack of money will persuade him that a temporary job in a supermarket (loads around at the moment!) is a better option.

Yeah, great idea. Punish the young man for having a disability and suffering from ableism in the jobs market.
PlanDeRaccordement · 22/11/2021 22:37

@titchy
Uni students aren’t eligible for UC....

Hellocatshome · 22/11/2021 22:37

Having a disability that excludes you from the armed forces doesn't necessarily mean you have a disability that makes finding a job difficult. I am medically excluded from the armed forces due to partial hearing loss. I have never had any difficulty finding a normal job.

Ay2k1 · 22/11/2021 22:39

He’s been applying for supper market jobs since he was 16 I’ve helped him on probably 100s of applications for them in that time period every time he applies for one we get sent a online test to do within 5 minutes of completing it he gets told his unsuccessful

Eh? Why do you think it's his disability that's stopping him getting a job - I got the impression he was being a lazy sod? Was I wrong?
