14yo DD shrinking

BananaBreakfast · 06/09/2021 07:21

DD was growing about 4 inches a year until last year, when she only grew 3 inches but reached 5'9". She was hoping to get to 6 foot, like some of her aunts. But this year, she has actually got shorter somehow. We measure her once a month, and for the first few months she was 5'9", then since June is only 5'8".
I guess she has stopped growing, but what is with the shrinking?
Just to be clear: we mark the wall, it's not a measurement error.

You need to measure at the same time of the day, as you usually shrink a bit during the course of the day.

Nah she won’t be shrinking!

Measurement error

Wow! Just measured her as soon as she got up, she is 5'9" and a quarter.
Hard to believe she could get an inch smaller in a day. We used to measure first thing in the morning but switched to bedtime, and that is the difference.

How odd!

Why are your measuring your daughter once a month (I’m just being nosey)

MarshmallowSwede · 07/09/2021 14:36

I think this is around the time girls stop growing. I’m not sure but they usually shoot up a bit during puberty and stop, so it could be that this is her final height? But it’s not a bad thing if she is only 5’9.

I hope she won’t be disappointed if she doesn’t grow anymore. It’s fine and 5’9 isn’t 6 ft, but it’s still a nice tall height.

Are we supposed to be measuring our children once a month? Is that a thing?

holidaynearlyover · 07/09/2021 15:04

Children grow in fits and starts.

Has she started her periods? I think it's said that they grow for a couple of years after they start but don't know how true that is!

BananaBreakfast · 07/09/2021 19:52

@daisyjgrey I doubt it's a thing. I had to for the HV for a few months and it became a tradition.
