Is there something you can do similar to if you get stopped for a traffic offence.

DS drives too fast IMHO, but won't listen to his parents. "It's a limit not a target," etc.

But he might listen to someone else....

This is an excellent video. The presenter was paralysed in an accident aged 18 caused when she was driving too fast.

Could you fit a black box?

GoWalkabout · 04/09/2021 15:46

Can you insure him with the marmelade black box that gives him and you feedback on driving (hard cornering etc) after each journey (and he would have to drive safely to be insured)

I don't think you can just pay to go on those courses - you seem to need a police referral letter.

However you can pay for advanced driver courses, which should cover how, or rather when, you can drive fast more safely. This is one I found www.driversdomainuk.com/younger-driver-advanced-driver-training/

This is a graph of death rates by age - I remember an actuarial friend showing me something similar when we were both doing professional exams. He said the bump/jump in late teens/early twenties is due mainly to car accidents and suicides. Enough fatalities to skew a death rates chart is a pretty sobering reality in my opinion.

It's A-roads that are the main killers; as long as your DS knows that. There's nothing like experiencing a tractor in the middle of the road, or a deer, or someone who's just pulled out quite slowly, as you come flying round a corner, for educating you on the danger of speeding or even just driving quite fast on them. I expect you have said this many times! My DH is super cautious about tons of things but not cars. He crashed seriously three times in his youth; all three it was luck that kept him from being killed. Seems mad that he keeps such tight control over so many things in his life, but at that time he handed control of his actual life over to chance.

Black box not compatible with his car unfortunately!

My black box just plugs into my cigarette lighter! Made my insurance approx £300 cheaper a year so I took it. Surely you could just get one of those for him?

I'll look into it again. Thanks.
