DS smoking weed

DS is almost 16 and smokes weed every couple of weeks and I just hate it. I’m always telling him to stop and it’s a terrible habit etc But I don’t know if I’m over reacting? He has a part time job so funds it himself and says he enjoys it as a way to relax and unwind. Every time I talk to him about it he just points out he could be doing much worse things that his peers do such as regularly getting drunk or shoplifting.

I know there’s no point in getting cross or telling him off as he will just hide things from me and although I really don’t approve, I also don’t want to ruin our relationship.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have quite strong feelings about weed because I have seen the damage it can do. There's a general acceptance of it these days due to it being decriminalised in so many places. However...it can and does cause mental health problems...particularly in people who are prone to them anyway,

My own DH has suffered badly through it though he has now given up. My DD...also 16 had a spate of smoking it with mates and shortly after she started, she got very depressed.

She's stopped now and is getting better. I used to smoke too and over about 2 -3 years as a late teen I grew very low and depressed/paranoid.

Having said that, some people are fine on it. Keep an open discussion with him about mental health and how it affects some people.

DD says a lot of her mates are 'weed bores; these days....always stoned.

I told her that in a few years, there will be some who fall by the wayside and stop achieving anything due to smoking.
