Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this.

My ds has always struggled at times with anxiety and depression. He is speaking to the GP tomorrow and she will probably prescribe anti-depressants. He is waiting for counselling from his university.

If anybody reading this has dc this age taking anti depressants, are they helping and if so, are there side effects to manage?

Thanks in advance.

My 16yo is on Fluoxetine (anti-depression) and Propranolol (anxiety).
They have helped her sleep and her motivation. Having missed all of school since lockdown 1 she is well enough just in time to do a very limited number of GCSE assessments.
On ramping up the Fluoxetine she felt sick for about 2 weeks but otherwise it has all been positive.
She is having counselling and is looking to start CBT now her motivation is up enough to work with it.

If you look there are relevant threads on Childrens Mental Health and also in the adult Mental Health sections.

My 19yo DD has spent the last 15 months on Sertraline (also for anxiety & depression) and has just started the process of coming off it. It made her feel sick to start with and she had a bad stomach too. We were warned to watch out for an increased feeling of depression when she first started it but it was all ok.
